Dec 21 2012 is just around the corner and this is a year that has been causing both curiosity and concern for millions of individuals. This is considered a milestone year because it is the time when the ancient Mayan calendar comes to an end.

For some people this is just another turning of the calendar page; another rite of passage. For others this is a year that will bring about cataclysmic changes that will have far-reaching effects.

Before December 21st, 2012 draws to a close we will all discover whether the rumors of transformational change are true or not. There are hundreds of possible scenarios that are being discussed, yet no one is even sure whether the Mayan calendar was addressing ‘the end of times' or if the real message from these ancient peoples has been quite literally ‘lost in translation'.

As scientists have studied this civilization one amazing fact came to light regarding their calendar. The calendar appears to end during the December 21st winter solstice that occurs in the coming year.

Without the Mayan codex to help decipher the writings there is a good chance that this ‘world-ending' prophecy is nothing more than misinterpreted data. However there are many cultures and people who all hold similar beliefs about the importance of this date.

Native American tribes, Chinese astrologers, scientists, archaeologists and New Age followers are just a few examples of the people who are convinced that there will be some type of ‘life changing' events that will occur next December.

Some individuals believe that the Mayans foretold the coming Rapture where true believers are swept into the heavens in ‘the blink of an eye'. There are survivalists who point to the upheavals in the economy and rising armed conflicts as proof that a world war will take place in the coming year.

There are further predictions of devastation that include tales of a giant meteorite that will strike the Earth; floods and tidal waves that will sweep cities and nations into the sea; powerful solar explosions and even earthquakes of unmatched proportions. Whether these are merely the work of feverish imaginations or are true portents of future disaster are yet to be seen.

Time waits for no one, and even now the clock is ticking off the seconds until our date with destiny on December 21st, 2012.
