Yaz is one of the most popular birth control pill. Millions of women use it worldwide. It has chu
ed out millions of dollars along with its sister contraceptive in the same line, Yasmin for its manufacturer Bayer Healthcare. It is been marred with controversies off late.

Yaz and Yasmin are new generation oral contraceptive pill, which contain synthetic progestin called drospirenone. Other active ingredient in these pills is ethinyl estradiol. Both these ingredient if combined are said to have severe side effects such as gallbladder diseases and gallstones. Their use can cause gallbladder diseases like Cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder) and Cholelithiasis (gallstones). In some cases patients may need removal of gallbladder.

Drospirenone is believed to develop blood clots, which can cause fatal results if they travel to heart or lungs. They can also damage liver or kidney as drospirenone blocks the hormone aldosterone in the kidneys.

These fatal side effects have led to several lawsuits being filed against Bayer Healthcare. Many Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits filed against Bayer Healthcare in Pennsylvania state courts were consolidated into a mass tort. Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas judge Sandra Mazer Moss consolidated them in a mass tort and had appointed 3 Pennsylvania atto
eys to serve as liaison counsel for the plaintiffs.
Another consolidation of Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits took place in New Jersey. Around 4000 and growing Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits had been consolidated in Illinois. These cases had been consolidated under Judge David Herndon, a US District Judge for the Southern District of Illinois.

But Bayer’s nightmare doesn’t end here. More lawsuits have been filed against it. There are another lawsuits filings in state of Califo
ia after the consolidation. This lawsuit is going to remain in the Superior Court of Riverside Califo
ia. This lawsuit alleges that four plaintiffs of this lawsuit have suffered from life threatening health issues due to use of Yaz. This health issues are related to Pulmonary Embolism, heart attack and other lung damages. They have asked for punitive damage along with compensation.

In another event of lawsuit filing, eleven plaintiffs have filed together lawsuit in the current Los Angeles mass tort recently, alleging Yasmin and Yaz of producing severe side effects. All of these plaintiffs have suffered due to use of Yasmin. Some of them have suffered blood clots and stroke, while others have developed either pulmonary embolism or gall bladder diseases.

The lawyer in the case has blamed Bayer along with its subsidiary company Berlex Laboratories International and pharmaceutical distributor McKesson Corporation. Berlex originally introduced Yaz in 2001 and Yasmin after five years, but later was acquired by Bayer Healthcare in 2006. Since then Bayer is enjoying the popularity of both the drugs. The lawsuit blames the pharmaceutical company along with other defendants of misleading the consumers and marketing the product even being aware of its fatal side effects. It alleges that the company sold the drug and misled consumers even after FDA warning.

Two of the plaintiffs namely Sophia Brown and Dakota Terral both suffered from Yasmin or Yaz pulmonary embolism. Luckily they received treatment on time and survived. Blood clots developed due to use of Yasmin could be fatal as they can lead to stroke as in the case of another plaintiff Hannah Denman.

Bayer is blamed that it has not provided adequate warning regarding severe side effects of these drugs even though it was aware of it. Several studies also support the claim that use of Yasmin could lead to blood clots. It could even lead to heart attack or death.

All the plaintiffs in the case are demanding punitive damage along with compensation for medical expenditure, lost of job and pain and suffering.
