Mastering anger management techniques is second nature to some people. Many of the rest of us, however, discover that we didn’t learn these skills growing up and it’s taking a toll on our relationships. Fortunately, it’s never too late to learn how to better manage our feelings and not let our emotions get out of control.

Feeling angry is perfectly normal, but knowing how to manage it and not let it get out of control is the key to long-lasting relationships. The following anger management techniques can help.

A good place to start is by making an anger management plan. Below are a few anger management techniques that you can incorporate into your plan.

First, take a step back. Give yourself time to think and ask yourself the following questions. Go for a short walk outside if possible, to give yourself time to think.

Try asking yourself if this situation will matter ten years from now.

Next, consider the outcomes of your actions. Before you react, ask yourself if your reaction is likely to defuse the situation or aggravate it.

By the time you do this, often you will find that the anger has subsided enough that you can make a better decision.

Visualization is another useful anger management technique. Imagine how someone you admire might respond to the situation and mimic their response in your own words and expressions.

It is never a good idea to “vent” anger by punching things or acting in a violent manner. These practices do not release anger but instead reinforce the feeling of being violently out of control.

Human beings are creatures of habit so when we practice good anger management techniques they soon become second nature.

Learning to control anger won’t come over night but with practice it will come. Hopefully these anger management techniques can help you get control of your anger and lead to healthier, happier relationships.
