Mr. Lin came to Boston for his post doctoral study when he was 30 years old. He had been busy with his study and really enjoyed his coffee and soda because those drinks are cheap and convenient. After Mr. Liu finished his post-doctoral training at Boston College, he found a job in a biotech company in Weston as a research scientist. He had such passion for his research project that he did not have time to cook or buy healthy food. When Mr. Lin turned into 40 years old, he noticed that his sleep pattern had changed. He had to get up 2 to 3 times at night to go to the bathroom. Mr. Lin had been a very good sleeper since he was a child. The interrupted sleep made him feel tired during the day and he could not work as efficiently as he did before. He went to see his urologist at the Newton Wellesley hospital to figure out what was causing his frequent night urination. His urologist told him that his prostate had enlarged and was pressing on his bladder, which was irritating his bladder. He was told that his PSA was also elevated. The normal range at the Newton Wellesley hospital is below 2, his PSA was up to 4. Elevated PSA means that he may have inflammation in his prostate.

As a researcher, he would like to know what caused his PSA going up and how he could lower it without medications. He researched the internet and was very happy to find that fish oil could help an enlarged prostate. He instantly bought the most expensive Fish oil from a Vitamin store in downtown Boston. After Mr. Lin took Fish oil for about 6 months, he went back to Newton Wellesley hospital for a PSA recheck. Surprisingly, The PSA had risen to 6. He also noticed that the frequency of his night urination had not been reduced, but his bladder seemed to have more residual urine. He is so worried about his PSA because if it continued to go up, then there was a higher probability of developing prostate cancer. He came to Boston Chinese acupuncture clinic in Needham hoping the acupuncturist and herbalist in Needham could help him normalize his PSA and reduce the frequent night urination.

His Boston acupuncturist asked about his diet and life style and recommended that he get rid of processed food and sugary drinks so he could reduce his belly fat and bad estrogen. Then he started acupuncture treatments to reduce the inflammation in his prostate twice a week for 6 weeks, then once a week for a year. At the mean time, he started taking Chinese herbs to clear up the internal heat in his body. He lost 20 lbs within 12 months. He went back to check his PSA in Newton Wellesley Hospital and the level dropped to 3. Now Mr. Lin continues with acupuncture once a week to strengthen his kidney and bladder function to reduce the residual urine in the bladder. He is able to sleep through the night with improved memory and creative thinking. He was promoted to senior research scientist in his Weston company after he published a good research paper in Science. With increased salary, he was able to buy a house a Wellesley so his kids can go to the good publish school .
