One of the simplest ways to get and stay motivated is to get interested in something. In fact, getting and staying motivated is incredibly difficult if you don’t have a strong interest in what you’re doing.

While it is possible to force yourself to move ahead with a disinteresting goal or project, it usually has little to do with motivation and more to do with applying strong willpower.

If you want to make it easy on yourself instead of having to use force, learn to pursue activities that actually mean something to you. Anything less will only set you up for stress and frustration.

In order to choose activities that are meaningful to you, take time to fully explore your aspirations in life. Really think about exactly what you want; don’t assume you have the same goals you had years ago or that you want the same thing your neighbor or coworker want.

Be very clear about what you want before you begin trying to get motivated and before you begin moving toward your chosen outcome.

Here’s how to tell if your goal is right for you: forget about the outcome and instead focus on the process involved in getting there. Would you enjoy it?

Too many of us get hooked on a glittery outcome that looks great on the outside but is hollow and cold on the inside.

While you may initially feel attracted to a specific outcome like a better job or more passive income streams or a hot new romance, would you enjoy the process you’d engage in every day to create such an outcome? Would you be able to enjoy the journey while moving toward your destination? Will you feel interested in the things you’re doing to transition to this new reality?

You may think it doesn’t matter, but it’s the ONLY thing that matters. No matter how shiny and seductive the outcome is, if the journey is painful, boring or unfulfilling, you probably won’t make it to the outcome anyway. You’ll lose interest long before then - and when your interest wanes, so will your motivation.

As you begin thinking about the goals you want to set, take some time to explore alternate pathways that lead to them. For example, you may want to set a goal of achieving greater financial abundance in your life. There are many ways you can do that, but taking a job you’ll hate just because it pays more isn’t the wisest way to do it. Taking a job you’ll LOVE and throwing yourself wholeheartedly into it is one way to do it. Starting a business based on your greatest passions is another way to do it.

With every goal, look at more than just the outcome you want to create. Get motivated about the little steps on your journey BEFORE you reach the finish line. Take an interest in the things you do, and before you know it you’ll be effortlessly motivated to keep moving forward. How much easier could it get?
