Are you caught in an abusive relationship?
I was in a verbally and emotionally abusive relationship many years ago, and spent nine years feeling pretty sorry for myself.
What frightened me was a story I read that stated that in many cases, verbal abuse will turn to physical abuse.
Because of this possibility, you should find a way out of your situation if this is where you are right now.
When you are involved in an abusive relationship you have three options:
1. Stay where you are and take it
2. Stay and get help
3. Get out of there!
Especially in the case of a physically abusive relationship, you MUST put your safety and that of your children first.
Staying and putting up with it might feel like the safest option right now, but in the long term things could get much worse.
Also, your children could fall victim to the attacks or even grow up and find abusive partners of their own!
If you must stay, then you also need to get some help on how to deal with the abuse and hopefully prevent it happening again.
Telling a close relative or friend could be a good option, or you might choose to talk to a professional who specialises in abuse.
One very important fact you must face is that your partner will continue to hurt you for as long as you allow them to.
It took me nine long years to wake up to this fact!
If you choose to and can get out safely, do it sooner rather than later, but I do suggest you seek professional help in dealing with your situation. You also don’t want to find yourself in the same situation again in the future.
Your safety is paramount when you are in an abusive relationship, and trying to reason with an abuser is probably not going to work in many cases.
Abusers tend to be unhappy with very low self esteem (why else would they be like this?), but nothing justifies hurting another individual, no matter what.
Getting help can be as simple as searching online or making a call. Just remember that for as long as you give them permission, they will continue to hurt you.
