Today,I just read the greatest article! I found the preliminary abstract in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. It discussed a recently concluded study done at the University of California San Diego where I worked for 7 years, as a clinical research associate in Ophthalmology, prior to becoming a Personal Trainer.

The study involved 1,490 women who were diagnosed with breast cancer between 1991 and 2000. After the women were treated with chemotherapy and became cancer free, researchers tracked their daily habits for 11 years. The study showed that the death rate for women who consumed a high fiber diet and engaged in high physical activity was 44% lower than their counterparts who ate little fiber and barely exercised. Exercise was defined as brisk walk for at least 30- 45 minutes daily.

This study is important because this is the first time research has suggested that physical activity and sound nutrition can negate the obesity factor which is linked to breast cancer. Researchers concluded that both diet and exercise must be done together. Here are some interesting facts about breast cancer.

* An estimated 178,000 women in the US will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.

* Annually, about 40,000 women in America die from breast cancer.

* Women between the age of 45 and 74 face the highest risk of getting breast cancer.
