Reflections from John Henry:
A Once Human Angel

As I watch the human condition and remember my time on Earth, I am struck by the ways in which we unintentionally perpetrate duality within the systems of our body and the experiences of our life. An example, recently observed is this. One is at a birthday party; maybe it’s even your own birthday party! There is a chocolate mousse cake. Yum, yum. Beautiful presentation, delicious taste, delightful aroma, and the celebratory nature with which one would participate in eating some of this cake! Yum, yum, all the way around.

Except, that there are thoughts like: Oh, I am on this diet—I just started it, oh, darn. I shouldn’t eat any cake. Oh, maybe a small piece? Maybe I can go without food tomorrow… sugar isn’t that good for me. My blood sugar will rise; is chocolate good for you? Well, I think so. It has these bioflavonoids, no, it’s a, gee what is it again, oh, antioxidant that makes it good for you; but, I’m allergic to wheat. I wonder if it’s flourless.

This illustration shows how we tell ourselves yes and no at the same time. Yes to the cake and no to eating it and digesting it properly. What does that idea of saying yes and no offer to you, when you read it? What does it say about the tension, doubt, separation that exists in a large percentage of your decisions and in a large part of your body/emotion/mind? It offers that the three levels are not unified and therefore your decision, even if it is to not eat the cake, sets up a tension between your levels.

I am not talking about weighing two opportunities and making a choice between things like jobs, places to live, women to love (sorry, had to add that), where to go first if you have three things to do in an hour. I’m talking about the desires you have versus the qualifications, limitations, and conditions that you impose around those desires.

For the record, I am not saying eat the chocolate cake. For the record, I am not saying, don’t eat the chocolate cake. I am saying, observe that duality is reinforced by many of the moment-to-moment choices that life brings.

If you want to eat the cake, eat the cake. Do so unconditionally. Eat the cake unconditionally. It is my opinion that your body’s reaction to what you eat is most times caused by your dualistic feelings and thoughts about your actions.

When you eat the cake, REALLY EAT THE CAKE, the joy and celebration you experience is one hundred percent. The sophisticated factory of your digestive and physiologic system is then allowed to digest without conditions being placed on it or ideas of horror, challenge, illness, etc. being digested at the same time that you are digesting the cake.

This is one example of how we conditionally hold ourselves separate and create duality within our system. How about if you had thoughts like: what an amazingly delicious way to love my body, celebrate with my loved ones, and appreciate the delicacies of life!

Speak to the positive aspects of all of your decisions. If you are hell-bent on eating the cake, be congruent. Enjoy it!

As life unfolds and the opportunity manifests to choose, do so with intention. Have an intention to be congruent about every decision you make. Life is too short to have tension that you create because you are conflicted. Use good judgment, but more important, keep clear of should’s and shouldn’ts, and enjoy your life!

(I use the example of the chocolate cake because it is a recent experience of a ‘friend’. If you have a physical condition that makes it unhealthy or unwise for you to eat a piece of chocolate mousse cake, then please pick another example to practice with other than the one above. Take the point of the article and apply it to your decision-making process).
