As the train chugs into Geelong, the eye has already been warmed by fetching sights of the bush land. And if you are getting in from Melbourne you will marvel at the laid-back, relaxed mien of the city. No one seems to be in a hurry here and all the suburbs appear as if brushed with a somnolent wave.

Most three and World Best hotels in Geelong have this stately, if laid-back appearance. It is as though the bustle of the city has never touched them. The Sundowner Geelong is one such in which you will get access to a luxury spa among other things. And after your luxury spa experience you can take a walk around the esplanade area, return to your room where you will get access to Austar TV and a bottle of wine!

If you want to stay in a state of enhanced comfort and style we recommend the Haymarket five star hotel in the hub of Geelong’s CBD. This is a luxury hotel with a difference thanks to its highly personalized services, individually-designed rooms, and facilities catering exclusively to the corporate clientele. With hills at the backdrop and set off by trees, the luxury hotel has a character all its own.

The beauty of being in Geelong is taking advantage of the lovely walks and trails, especially around the Great Ocean Road. Go up to the hills over Apollo Bay where you will be greeted by thick forests carpeted with ferns and shrubs. Some trees in this area are over a hundred years old!

Or, stroll down to Melbourne Road towards Limeburner’s Point and admire the historical Bollards created by well-known artist Jan Mitchell which narrate the history of the town. You can also go around the recently renovated Waterfront and admire the merry streetscape with its broad boulevards dotted with modern sculptures.

If you travel about a kilometer along the Eastern Beach Road you will find yourself at the entrance of Geelong Botanic Gardens. Apart from its great landscape you will find yourself admiring the architecture and art work at the entrance. Do stop by at the Tea House if you feel the need to relax. A refreshing cup of coffee or tea in natural surroundings serves as a real pick-me-up. The park is judiciously divided into areas such as 21st Century Garden, Rainforest, and Rose Garden.

‘Footie’ fans love to visit the Geelong Football Club in Kardiania Park especially during winter. The Kardiania Park is quite an eyeful hailed as it is for its beaches and architecture.

Despite its ‘sleepy town’ tag, the town boasts an active nightlife- just go down to ‘Lamby’s’ beneath the National Wool Museum – another Geelong landmark – and you’ll know. Lamby’s has the coolest ambience with revelers of diverse ages living it up till the wee hours.

And if you are in the mood for some ‘alternative’ music you should try the Barwon Club next to the Barwon River. It contains a nice restaurant and a bar (divided by a step), a TV jukebox and a local band.

There’s a lot to imbibe and enjoy in this small town called Geelong.
