Affiliate marketing is a method of making money on the Internet. It is an ideal method to use for a new Internet business because you can make money while spending little or none of your own. Plus, the merchant takes care of all the details. He is responsible for developing the product, making the sale, handling the payment collection, delivering the product, any taking care of any customer issues.
But all is not perfect with affiliate marketing. To be successful, you have to refer traffic to the merchant. Each time one of your referrals makes a purchase; you make a percentage of the purchase price. That is the only way to be successful using affiliate products. But getting traffic to move from point A to point B is not an easy job. Getting traffic involves an investment of either effort or money. If you won’t make a significant effort, and can’t commit any money, affiliate marketing is probably not for you.
There is common problem that many beginners make. They reason that if one affiliate program is good, then 15 programs must be great. Nothing could be further from the truth. By trying to focus on too many programs at once, you will not send enough referrals to any of them to be successful. (On average, about 1 out of 100 referrals will make a purchase.) When you are just starting out, select 2 good programs and work both of them at once. If you write articles, include a link to both programs in every article that you write.
Another common problem is the failure to research a program thoroughly. Too many times a beginner will just choose the program with the highest commission. This is almost always a mistake. Before deciding on a program, spend time in related forums and ask lots of questions. Find out if anyone is experienced with the product as a user. Ask if anyone is familiar with the product as an affiliate. Only after doing this sort of research should you commit to a particular program. Ideally, you should try the product yourself. If you don’t have the money to buy it, ask the merchant for an evaluation copy.
A third common mistake is diversifying your programs (for example-1 in the bird watching niche and 1 in the dog grooming niche). This may seem like a good idea, but it will not work. Any affiliate program that you choose should be related to 1 central theme. That way you can advertise them together on your website, or in articles. This doubles the effectiveness of your advertising efforts and increases sales.
