The film did not disappoint us in the year when we needed the most comfort, peace of mind, hope and escape. Here are some of the most impressive Tamil movies I've experienced in 2021 in no particular order.

Mandela

Yogi Babu has been ubiquitous in the Tamil cinema world for the last few years. However, there are few extra ordinary roles of this actor, and he is not a comedian. Mandela is a satirical, tasty and fascinating piece. In his debut, Madonne Ashwin makes a skillful satire by creating a comprehensive universe and uses that universe to develop social criticism. The film features some great acting and uplifting music.

Karnan

After the unforgettable "Pariyerum Perumal", Mari Selvaraj shocked with "Karnan". This re-story of Mahabharata is full of anger and burns like the sun to everything that blocks the way. The film caused some controversy with a plot that was inspired by a real-life incident. However, it is undeniable that Selvalage has great visual abilities. And don't forget the wonderful album of Santosh Narayanan.

Maadathy

Leena Manimekalai created the disturbing image of inequality in Maadathy, based on the collective experience of the Puthirai Vannar community in Tirnerveri. She is reminded of how refreshing, delicate and powerful a woman's gaze is. The restraint of Manimekarai, who records sexual violence, and the energy that captures the flowing brilliance of nature make this self-produced film an important work for her.

Koozhangal

Director Vinothraj's debut is an official Oscar for Best movie in India and has been selected for Best Movie in The New Yorker Magazine this year. This is not without reason. In a simple story of father and son, Kuzangal provides a wealth of social comments about family dysfunction and patriarchy in our lives, recording small rebellions and their worthlessness. There is. Needless to say, the image of the dry land in the countryside of Tamil Nadu was devised.

Sarpatta Parambarai

Ranjit brilliantly builds the mid-1970s madras, not only in various details of the movement, but also in the politics of the time. Throughout the story of Kabilan, Ranjit captures both personal and political and emphasizes that the success of the underprivileged is wrong.

Jai Bhim

The film with Surya, directed by TJ Gnanavel, meets several criteria. It's advanced, tells an important story, and is well done. But the most important thing is obviously not to make the hero a savior. A court drama depicting a tribal woman struggling for her husband, who was violent by her custody. It's not surprising that Jai Bim was one of Tamil Cinema's most admired works of the year, with its grounded script, great acting, and fascinating music.

Sivaranjaniyum Sila Pengalum

Vasant Sai's anthology captures ordinary women in an atmosphere and sincerity. At a time when I was personally tired of anthology, Sivaranjaniyum Sila Pengalum reminded me of the possibilities of this format. By arranging the lives of three different but ordinary women side by side, Vasans seeks to secure her own space both publicly and privately, while fighting the non-linearity of women's empowerment and the rebels in the home every day. It is a wonderful picture of how they are fighting. (And what a year it was for Lakshmi Priya Chandrumuri, thanks to the wonderful performances of "Kanan" and "Sivaranjaniyum Sila Pengalum"!).
