Have you ever considered quitting your regular job and starting your own business? Maybe you’d like to supplement your income with a part time venture that you can take on during the evenings and on the weekends? Owning your own business is a great way to make a living while also being in full control of your own destiny. By
pursuing the dream of becoming an entrepreneur, you also give yourself the opportunity to build something that is truly great.

Unfortunately, many businesses require a lot of funding to get started. Most people don’t have that, and getting funds from investors can be extremely difficult unless you have a past record of successfully launching businesses. Even then, you are still often expected to pitch in funds of your own.
However, this doesn’t mean that you should give up on your dream of owning your own business. There are options available to you that don’t require a lot of up-front funding, that you could easily start right now.

1. Housecleaning

If you can afford the supplies to clean a home, and have the ability to quickly turn a messy home into a clean space, you are well on your way to opening a successful housecleaning business. You can print out flyers and business cards, and post notices on Craigslist and in your local newspaper advertising your services. The only additional expense that you will incur is the cost of a background check and bonding. However, having those two things done will make you much more marketable.

Of course, you don’t have to limit yourself to cleaning homes. There are many small businesses who would rather contract with somebody to come in to provide nightly cleaning services than hire employees to do the job.

2. Ebay Seller

If you’ve ever sold anything on Ebay, you know it’s a useful way to get rid of unwanted items. Did you know that many people also make a living as Ebay sellers? It’s true. People are continually giving away items or selling them for much less than they are worth, simply because they don’t want these items around any more. In many cases, you can take these items as is, and sell them on Ebay for a profit. In other instances, you may have to do a small amount of cleaning and refurbishing before reselling. The only other thing you will need to do is a bit of research so that you can fairly price the items you are selling.

To get started, begin by scanning the free and for sale ads on Craigslist, then see if there are any for sale/give away groups in your area that are active on Facebook. You can also try looking for items with resale potential at garage sales and flea markets. One caveat though. Some Facebook groups that offer items for free are intended to be a resource for needy people. Joining these groups with the purpose of reselling donated items is extraordinarily unethical. Be sure you know the intent of any group that you join.

3. Professional Organizer

Do you pride yourself on your ability to stay organized? If so, you should consider opening a business as a professional organizer. As a professional organizer, you will go into people’s homes and businesses and help them to purge and organize. Then, most importantly, you help people to stay organized by creating systems that they can follow on a daily basis in order to stay organized.

This is an extremely low-cost business to get into because the customer pays for both your time, and any objects that must be purchased in order to get their space organized. Your outlay is simply marketing materials such as business cards and flyers, and any licenses that are required in your area.
Although, to make sure all of your marketing copy looks professional, you might consider investing in having a professional writing service write advertising copy for you.

4. Children’s Birthday Party Planner

When it comes to planning birthday parties for children, people tend to fall into one of two categories. Either they love the entire process of planning, decorating, running the party, and cleaning up, or they hate every minute of it and would rather spend the time enjoying the party. Your target customer would be people in the latter group.

Many people who offer this service will have a few set party themes that they offer to their clients. These themes are usually based on kid-friendly characters, e.g., Disney princesses, or kid friendly topics, e.g., dinosaurs or pirates. You simply select the themes that you would like to offer and then plan activities that are related to that theme. After that, your startup expenses will be purchasing decorations and supplies, and advertising your new venture.

5. Personal Enrichment Instructor

Are you in an expert in something that could benefit others? If so, you might have a future as a personal enrichment instructor. To get started, you could contact community and senior centers, local community colleges, and local fraternal organizations to see if they would allow you to offer a class or series of classes related to your area of expertise in return for a fee paid by each person who signs up. If you aren’t sure whether or not you have a skill that applies, here are a few examples.

● Personal finance and investing

● Arts and crafts

Cooking and Baking

● Home repair

● Basic or advanced computer skills

6. Personal Assistant to The Disabled Elderly or Busy Professionals

There are many reasons that people require the help of a personal assistant. For the elderly and disabled having a person who is able to come into their
home a few times a week to do chores they are not capable of handling, driving them to appointments, and running errands, means that they are able to live independently in their own homes. Busy professionals often need personal assistants to do similar work so that they can spend more of their down time with family and friends.

One of the benefits of this, is that you may be able to organize the errands that you run in such a way that you take care of the needs of multiple clients at one time. Better yet, your expenses to get started are practically nothing.
