As I sit here and work on projects, today, it dawned on me that I should share with all of you entrepreneurs what today is for me: It’s a “Work on the Business” day. And, although some people may have OTHER suggestions on how to work when you have your own business, here are my suggestions for how to make the most out of your business so it thrives AND you have a life.

Day Type One: Work ON the Business Day
This is the type of day where you don’t see clients, but you focus on projects and programs. This may also be a day where you meet with your team. For me, it’s a time when other distractions need to be kept to a minimum so I am my most productive.

Day Type Two: Work IN the Business Day
This is the day/days you see clients. Sure, you can work on projects between clients, but my suggestion is don’t count on it. That can lead to HUGE amounts of stress! And your stress shows, even when you think you’ve hidden it.

Day Type Three: Days OFF!
How many of these do you schedule in during your work week? If you say none, and you are a business owner, you need some coaching! This is your BALANCE and is essential to your success. You are the boss of your enterprise, so if you want to take a day off to go HIKING (like me!), then do it! Even if it means just taking a day totally off to sit in the shade on your porch and read, DO IT! The removal from your work, and a day just for YOU will help your productivity and success more than you can imagine.

Where problems sneak in
As you get busier, soon the Days OFF and Work ON the Business Days shorten. Do NOT do this! Keep your day/days off, off, and keep your Work ON the Business Days just that, too. If you’re getting busier, then there are several things you can do: Schedule client appointments further out, hire help, or change your business model so you are able to serve more people at a time!

Pull your calendar out and plan your days, now. If you already have clients on a consistent schedule, then look at the days you DON’T have them scheduled, and for perhaps next month, start creating those “Work ON the Business Days” and “Days OFF”, now!

Following these steps will help you keep a work-life balance that works for everyone.
