College is stressful, and most students have no idea how to manage their thoughts, emotions, and actions effectively. Unfortunately, school doesn’t teach you how to manage your mind.
How many times did your parents and teachers tell you to concentrate? Most of us get that a lot.
However, how many times did they explain HOW to concentrate? Most of the answers I get after asking this question are obvious: 0 times.
The art of concentration is one of the most important skills that we can learn to thrive, both personally and professionally. Where attention goes, energy flows.
Mindfulness is both skill and art. Mindfulness is extremely related to concentration because, as you will see, mindfulness represents the direction of our conscious attention.
What is Mindfulness Exactly?

Mindfulness is the ability to focus your entire attention in the present moment. “Mind-full” suggests that your mind is fully attending to what you’re doing, to what’s happening around you, or to the environment you’re moving through.
The opposite of mindfulness is obsessive thinking. When you can’t stop thinking about something, what’s going on around, your reality becomes a second priority. When you’re jogging, for example, you can be fully present and feel your body, breath, and observe all the small things around you, or you can be “somewhere else” in your mind.
Mindfulness is an incredibly powerful tool that every human being can leverage instantly, regardless of their physical location, activity, and environment.
Of course, mindfulness brings a lot of significant benefits, such as increased levels of focus, improved happiness, and decreased stress .
Now let me tell you mindfulness helped me work my way through college, and how it can also help you.
It Allowed Me to Build Meaningful Relationships

Nowadays, students are paying more attention to their social media notifications than to the people around them. Whenever I went for a coffee with a bunch of friends from college, we were focusing 80% of our attention on our phones.
Mindfulness allows you to provide your unconditional and undivided attention to the person who’s speaking to you. You can understand not only his words but also where “he’s coming from.” There’s always a message behind words, and you cannot get that unless you’re mindful.
By constantly paying attention to everyone around me, I have managed to lay the foundation of several solid relationships that are serving me even today.
It Helped Me Deal with Exam Stress and Assignments

How can a student avoid plagiarism? That was one of the most pressing questions I had during college. Detecting plagiarism in student papers is extremely easy, as there are many tools that teachers use to detect and punish cheating.
But I was “smarter.” I’ve made a new habit: find plagiarism with Edubirdie, edit the plagiarized material, and voila – job done. After a while, guilt and disappointment started to hit me.
“Why can’t I take care of things without cheating?”
The obvious answer was that I didn’t know how to focus my attention in the right direction. When I came across mindfulness, everything changed. I was able to get everything done on time without having to sacrifice my dignity and without having to stress and agonize before every exam.
Being able to work on something without allowing your mind to get distracted is an amazing skill that has not only helped me only through college but has also shaped the standards and performances of my professional career.
It Taught Me What Happiness Is

College time can be depressing due to various reasons. Stress, lack of true friendships, unmet expectations – everything is related to our minds.
I have understood that if I can manage my attention and place it in the right direction, negative thoughts will become a thing of the past. And they did.
Once I started being mindful, the simple fact that I was present in every activity that I was doing showed me that happiness could not be found “outside”, but only “inside”.
It Helped Me Stay Focused on What’s Important

When your thoughts are controlling your lifestyle, your subconscious mind is the “chief” of your actions. When you’re not fully aware of your thoughts and emotions, you will act impulsively.
That was me, until a point.
By practicing mindfulness, I became a sovereign human being that was no longer carried away by impulses. Even when I struggled with stdies, like couldn’t finish my assignment or find good arguementative essay titles, I turned to mindfulness practice. I have started to take control of every thought, emotion, and action. To tell you the truth, only then was I able to define what’s truly important, and only then I was able to stay focused on those things.
It Shaped the Foundation of My Adulthood

Lastly, yet very importantly, mindfulness helped me become both a “successful student” and a “successful adult.”
Like any skill, mindfulness requires consistent practice. Because I’ve started practicing it during college, I had already shaped incredible habits by the time I met my wife and stumbled upon my dream career job.

Being mindful isn’t something you do to be “cool” or to show others that you’re a spiritual person. In fact, nobody has to know that you’re practicing mindfulness because that is not the point.
Nevertheless, practicing mindfulness on a day-to-day basis will allow you to effortlessly overcome your most important challenges in college and not only. Rather than using a student plagiarism checker tool, you can actually concentrate on crafting unique papers. Rather than relying on other people’s help, you can be mindful and figure out the solutions on your own.
Use mindfulness now and forever, because past and future are merely illusions of our minds. The only real thing is the present moment, and that is where your undivided attention should be at!
