If you have ever looked for or been to a psychologist, you know that it is no easy task. In fact, it is rather daunting at times. Finding a great psychologist is like looking for tiny push pin in plush borderline personality disorder counselling london carpet. It is possible but frustrating.

The odds of getting a great psychologist the first time around are slim. For me, it took several tries before finding the right one. Over that period of time, I developed a system of narrowing down the number of potential psychologists that were right for me. I had tried the "hit and miss" theory and I usually missed. I knew there was a better way. I am not saying I have become a master of finding great psychologists, but I have a system that works.

Ask questions about the psychologist(s) you are considering. Find out more about their specialties and how long and where they have practiced.
Look up their license number(s) on the business database of your state government to ensure their license(s) are current.
Find out if their office accepts your insurance policy. If you do not have insurance coverage, find out if they offer discounts for full payments or for uninsured individuals.
Make sure the location of their practice is not inconvenient or too far away.
Find out more about their emergency policy. Are they available around the clock? Can you reach them at any time if needed? Are there other psychologists in the office with whom you can visit or be referred to if your psychologist is unavailable?
Find out if their office hours are convenient for you and if they can work with your schedule.
After narrowing the list of potential psychologists, create a list of questions when you go for an initial consultation or evaluation. Trust your instincts. You will probably feel uncomfortable during an initial consultation, but try and focus on how that particular psychologist makes you feel. If you leave with a bad feeling, that psychologist is probably not a good fit for you.

You can find a great psychologist who will help you achieve optimal results and best quality of life. Do not be discouraged if after one, two or even three do not work out. If at first you do not succeed, try again. You will find the right one.
