We don´t like to be vulnerable. We don´t like to be at the mercy of pain and sadness or any other intense emotion that runs through our body. We like to be in control of what we feel and experience, to defend ourselves whenever we are hurt, to appear strong and powerful. So we run from our pain, whenever we sense it coming. We try to outsmart our suffering by avoiding it as best as we can. What we don´t actually realize is that running away from our feelings is actually what causes us to suffer.
Many of us are living, but are not really alive. We do not truly live our experiences, but perceive them only through the veil of past impressions, thoughts and concepts. We are more at home in our constantly analysing and evaluating thinking processes than in our direct sensations. And by so doing, we disconnect from the beauty and magnificence that life has in store for us. Joy, happiness, love, peace are all vibrations of our hearts, that want to be felt and experienced at each moment of our lives. But only rarely do we allow ourselves to be really happy and fulfilled.
When we experience something truly beautiful, it can open-up the universe and allow grace to bathe us in Her sweet embrace. Whether it be an incredibly gorgeous landscape, the smell of a rose in full bloom, an exquisite piece of music, or a delicious mouth-watering bite, when the senses are titillated and deeply experienced, we create a portal to commune with our true essence. Its seems to be a week of people talking about relationships.........and more about ending relationships than starting them. It is difficult when one is in this position in life. Whenever we speak of fighting, we generally refer to fighting through violence. Something is there menacing us in some way and we feel the need to crush and annihilate it. We may see this menace inside or outside of us. However, menace as a way of seeing and interpreting our reality always takes root within ourselves. I forgot a friend’s birthday this month. A friend that I’ve known for over 20 years. I really have no excuse, as it just so happens that 7 birthdays of close friends and family fall in the first week of January. So I’m usually prepared for this week and quite aware of each birthday on each day. But this year, I slipped up with her birthday which fell on the Saturday. An amazing realisation was gifted to me by a dear friend recently. I have always been of the understanding that many of our mental health issues are caused due to chemical imbalances in the brain. This pre conception is due to working within the mental health sector for almost four years.
Each one of us knows to what extent the human experience can be hard and painful. And most of us try to live our lives doing their best to avoid painful experiences and to look for those that feel pleasurable. We tend to forget that the more we try to avoid pain and run away from it, the more we actually suffer. And we end up being caught up in this way of experience.
We are living in a world where there is a lot of contrast and division. Battle lines are being drawn and tempers are rising. As we break away from old paradigms, or ways of thinking, it creates separation and fear. It can be threatening and scary to move away from one way of thinking and perhaps entertain another way of looking at life. With our new administration we are being asked as a country to look within and find a way to shift our view, so that a whole new way of being can emerge. We are being called to put down our disagreements and shift our focus to finding solutions.
