Besides a carrying device, dog backpacks offer a solution to a common problem that many dog owners often face. While some dogs walk perfectly on a leash, other dogs pull relentlessly. Dogs love to work and by placing a backpack on Fido, you’re giving him a job to do during his walk. This job helps to keep the dog focused while eliminating his need to pull.

As relationship professionals, clients regularly ask us how they can tell if they are in love. If you were to ask 100 people, you would likely get 100 different answers. Attempting to define the emotion of love with words is like trying to catch water with your hands—just when you think you have articulated all there is to it, it slips through your fingers. Let’s give it a try though.

written by Sue Susskind Caregiving for a loved one can be both rewarding and stressful at the same time. It is a satisfying feeling to know that your loved one is getting wonderful care because you are providing it, but often times the emotional and physical demands can take their toll on you if you do not take the time to take care of yourself. Caregiving takes a lot of time, effort and work.
written by Patricia Nunan Last week I had the opportunity to meet Eleanor. Eleanor is 69 years old and has been enjoying an active and independent retirement. Because of a freak accident that fractured her hip and broke her back, she now needs full time care. She is unable to get into her home or enjoy the simple things she did just two years ago. I was called to help Eleanor assess her situation. She faces the difficult decision of whether or not to move to a new home or modify her existing home so she can stay there.

You are not a stupid person. Not by any means. In fact, it’s my guess that you’re healthier than most. You probably exercise regularly. You watch what you eat. You keep up-to-date on the latest health conce s. You don’t binge on sugar. And you never – ever – eat fast food. Well, almost never. But you do have a few unhealthy skeletons in your closet – ones that you probably aren’t even aware of.
written by Mark Sneller, PhD Our reaction to our outdoor and indoor environments can be related to the weather of the day. For thousands of years, people have understood that sunlight, cloudiness, stormy conditions, and when they could measure it, falling barometric pressure can affect their health and well-being. Let’s take a brief look at how this works.
Mashed potatoes and gravy. Peanut butter and jelly. Bacon and eggs. They’re all classic combinations. Wine and cheese is another time-honored pairing, but which varieties taste best together? How can a “non-foodie” sort through the complexities and come up with choices that do justice to both? Included below are some tips for serving wine and cheese successfully. Remember, the best options are the ones you like best, but experience points to certain pairings that have general appeal and are a safe bet when entertaining guests.

Since 2003, I’ve been in private practice helping people to extend their lives through holistic health practices. For the last month, I’ve been helping someone I love walk to the door that separates life from death.

Written By: Dave Hager DAVE’S CORNER 16 APRIL 2010 SELF DISCOVERY journal: THE SENIOR ORPHAN I don’t know if I can write this but I’ll try. We began work on the new investment property in Winston-Salem yesterday. I went up today to follow through and consult with Phillip Watson, my contractor, and had dinner with my son and his family after. On the way home, I called my daughter and caught her home so I swung by to see her and her intended. It was nearly dark when I left there.
You can tell when it’s that time again. Somewhere between the bizarre, Euro-styled perfume ads before Xmas and the speed-rap Super Bowl flat screen sales, there’s the flood of dieting ads and gym memberships before New Year’s Eve. This is to remind us we haven’t been living the way we intended.
As we approach the New Year, many people are ruminating about recent misgivings and sins, simultaneously readying themselves for commitment to yet another list of personal resolutions. We all know how this generally works out…a couple of promises are pursued with purposeful intent while most of our list inadvertently falls by the wayside.

Time goes by so fast! I can’t believe it’s already the end of summer and almost the end of autumn. I’m not ready! I was so comfortable and basking in the warmth of summer. I was so grateful for the splash of fall colors and the crispness of the air…and now there is snow on the mountains and the inevitable winter approaching. I know the time is coming to bundle up, brush the cobwebs off the snow shovel and turn up the heat, but I’m noticing how I’m clinging to the last of the mild weather and the last of the long days.

How do you know when it's time to retire? Try some of the following on for size... 1. Work has begun to interfere with all the many other things you want to do - fitting them all into weekends and holidays is becoming more impossible or unpalatable. 2. Life just seems too short to carry on working. 3. You crave your freedom. 4. You want to have control over your time. 5. You want to retire while you have the health and strength to do everything that you enjoy. 6. You have a sense that you would regret continuing to work full time if you did it for much longer. 7.

It is difficult for many people to understand that there are very different types of water around. This is largely due to the chemical structure of natural water. Water that comes from your tap is natural water at a pH of normally 7.5; which many people fear may not be healthy for us, because of the chemicals that may be in the water through chemical fertilizer drainage from soil into the water.
Dear Jim: You said in your column that second and third marriages have much higher divorce rates than first marriages. Why is that? Don’t people learn from their mistakes? I’m particularly conce ed about this because I’m divorced and the man I’m dating has been divorced twice. We both have kids, although he has his kids only on weekends. Are we asking for trouble if we get married? (“Peggy”)
The word ergonomic is the study of the interaction between individuals, machines or appliances in their environment that can affect their performance and productivity. The purpose of Ergonomic is to assess the interaction, or relationship between each component for determining optimum improvement in performance. Ergonomic therefore examines the relationship between three elements: the individual, the equipment, the environment and how they can be improved. So what does this mean you may ask?

Living life as a retiree today could well be quite different to what you had planned. Normally when you would think of retirement you'd think of travel, time for relaxation and fun. Taking up new or old hobbies and interests and a time for you as a reward for all our hard work. It seems that there are very few if any countries that are not being affected by the economic downtu which has caused havoc with many savings plans, retirement investments, and pension plans as well as personal real estate. Security as you may have known it seems to be a thing of the past for many.

With so many entertainers, politicians, and professional athletes making headlines because of their sexual infidelities, it might be worth taking a look at how the law deals with adultery. Let’s start with a definition. Adultery, in most legal contexts, refers to a voluntary sexual relationship between two people, at least one of whom is married to someone else. Adultery includes not only what we think of as affairs, but also trysts with prostitutes, homosexual activity, and any other extramarital sex involving another person.
written by Harvey Rephen Given the hard economic times we as a country are facing, especially the Boomer, there is a stronger awareness as to what is really important in our lives. It’s not so much about the wealth in the bank, as too many of us are watching it dwindling faster and faster with each passing day, but it’s more about the intrinsic value of the wealth of a person.

We all know that exercise is good for you, but what if you have creaky bones and the body doesn't work the way you want it too! It is so frustrating to want to be out in the fresh air, be able to take care of your yard yourself and not be able to do either one the way you used to do it, but there are ways to work around some of the problems. Sometimes you have to compensate for the aches and pains or the lack of manipulation and strength; then hire or ask someone else to do the rest. You owe it to yourself.
A house is just a place to keep your stuff while you go out and get more stuff. – George Carlin Dante’s Infe or The 14th-century epic poem The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri is 14,000 lines of allegory describing the author’s philosophical journey through hell, Purgatory and beyond. In the story Dante one night dreams of a beautiful hillside and at the top is a paradise in waiting. All he has to do is climb to the peak to reach it.
1. Make an early start on planning and thinking about your life after retirement - not just the financial aspects of retirement, but the way that you want to live your life, where you want to live it, how you want to spend your time, who you want to spend it with, etc. 2. Try to become less absorbed in your work (especially if you have a tendency to become absorbed to the point of the exclusion of other, life-enhancing pursuits and activities) - aim to get (and maintain) a good work/life balance. 3.
As we get older and life has taken a few twists and turns we often find ourselves past the stage of striving for materialistic possessions. We are searching for something more meaningful. We want to feel passionate about something. It’s been said that if we don’t know what our passion is and want to find it that we need to find out what most interested us between the ages of around 7 to 10 years of age. That what interested at that age will often be our real passion. I have to admit that with a number of people I know this appears to be quite true.
How many times have you said in parting with someone in conversatio “Take care”. Quite a few colleagues end their e-mails with “Be well”. A friend of mine often says to me “Have a positive day”. Take care, be well, and have a positive day. Tall orders for a perfect life. Self care is a requisite for health. No, I’m not talking about self centeredness, nor being selfish. And, let’s put spa treatments, pedicures and shopping sprees aside. They are indulgences that belong in the pamper category. We’ll consider those an extra layer of care.

Last summer, I blogged about seven things I found truly aggravating about middle age. As long as I keep getting aggravated, I may have to make this an annual item. #1 – Road Food. Last year, I lamented that it was neither possible to eat anything I wanted nor to take long road trips. This year, I discovered that the two no longer go together. On a trip to Reno, I discovered that it is ill-advised to limit one’s intake to fast food, Jelly Bellys, donuts, and coffee. Unless you don’t mind being up half the night with heartbu reminiscent of San Francisco after the earthquake.

After going through the first two reasons why the western population is gaining so much weight.; we come to the third reason which is dehydration. I am inclined not to attribute all the blame to you personally, because we live in a society where we are bombarded with advertising. It is therefore not surprising that you follow the directions of the corporate leaders, who with their financial power; are able to lead you down their attractive commercial path of value-added offers and packaging for eating convenient fast food.r

* Do you believe that we are born with passion and purpose; to live through our hearts and not just our brains and logic? * Do you believe that we are meant to love, to be connected to and to honor ourselves first? * Do you believe that we deserve to be loved, to be supported, to be respected for being ourselves and to live by our own standards; to continually create the life we want? * Do you believe that we all have gifts and talents that are meant to be discovered, developed and shared; to live our lives as a contributing partner to those around us?
Breathing is a natural occurring movement in our body for gaining much needed oxygen to remain alive. We can use diaphragmatic breathing to activate additional oxygen in our bodies, when we need to calm our body or increase motivation in our activity. It will help change a lethargic, inactive person, to feeling alive and ready to face any uncomfortable state. To most people breathing is just a small movement in the lungs, for the purpose of gaining oxygen into the lungs that we need in order to live.
Your brand name represents your reputation, indicates your business ethics and becomes the symbol of what people think of you. The same is true for your own name. Your name is your brand, your representation of who you are. People received impressions of who you are, consciously or unconsciously, based on your name. When we hear a first name, we immediately think of other people who have shared that same first name that we have previously met. Our impression of others we know with the same first name correlates into our first impression of the new person.
Written by Lew Hamburger QUESTIONS FOR BOOMERS (and other humans) Can a vision of white, non-urban people becoming a minority in America have anything to do with the vitriol we see in political life of 2010? Does it differ from other times that Boomers have been through? Thus far the level of violence is far below that of the ’60’s or 70’s. What accounts for that? Who is doing what to whom? Have we learned anything along the way?
Deciding to move to a new country can be a difficult decision to make – partly because it’s not easy to know what day-to-day life is going to be like until you have lived in the country for a while. Sometimes unexpected things can happen, leaving you frustrated and wondering what you’ve gotten yourself into.

Written By: Lew Hamburger Been angry lately? All you have to do is scan the media and it seems the emotion of the decade. Where’s it coming from? Is it possible that we retain a primal residue from our early mammal days when we faced anything – body, animal, or other – that was different with the question: Can it eat me or do I have to eat it? Are we that afraid of differences? Could be.
Women and aging has always been a difficult conversation. Baby boomer women are starting to reach their mid sixties. For some, it has meant burying their heads in the sand of denial. For others it has meant a descent into despair. With the body, age is inevitable, but that doesn’t have to be a negative. In groups of friends and on the Internet, women are coming together to discuss body aging and the self-image that results. They want techniques and motivation to age with dignity and style. They want to discuss the challenges of getting older in a world that values youth and beauty.
I am so delighted with all of the new fitness ideas surfacing these days. From Nia to Zumba to Wii-Fit and Cardio Cinema – innovative ideas just keep on coming! Many of the new crazes involve dance, and as a former dancer myself, I’m thrilled to see these rise in popularity. Zumba is a combination of fitness and Latin dance moves that has really taken off – especially with Baby Boomers. Nia is similar but combines Latin dance with tai chi and yoga for a wonderful and fun work-out. This fall, I am offering Nia classes at my Healthy Boomer Body Center.

While the doom and gloom of the economic crises is creeping upward again, there may be light at the end of the tunnel for the aging boomer. Some leading edge financial pundits are finally starting to tell the truth of a downward spiral in certain sectors. One week the so-called recession is 'getting better' and the next, our government debt and financial situation is abysmal. Even in the City of Angels, Los Angeles, the potholes are getting deeper and there's no one out there to fix 'em. Unemployment rates are steadily on the incline, especially here in Hollywood.

This past weekend I was facing a significant decision impacting my business. I had been presented with an opportunity that showed a great deal of promise, but did require detailed effort on my part to incorporate into my practice. He asked me if I remembered the Pain/Gain tool that we had both
Ergonomic sitting is the term that I have created for performing work-based activities throughout the day for comfort in prolonged sitting. The term was created by me after finding I had overcome the postural scoliosis in my spine, caused from one leg being longer than the other; which is common in tall females like me. This has happened quite by accident from my love of cycling. I love being outdoors and exercising and I needed to lose weight, because I love eating. My friend dragged me on a cycle weekend many years ago, when I lived in Ontario.

A fabulous relationship has many of the same attributes as a great friendship. When it’s working, you can feel the “ka-chunk” as it settles neatly into its place in the universe. There’s someone to zip your dress, give an opinion about what tie goes with that jacket, get aspirin for your headache, or laugh at your jokes. Good stuff. But what sustains a committed relationship and makes it GREAT is emotional intimacy. That’s what makes living together easy and comfortable—and why every couple should have intimacy rituals that can be practiced daily.
This post was inspired by a client of mine who is definitely having mood swings and feels that her husband does not understand. His comments suggest that she is either mentally ill, depressed or just basically unstable. His recommendations are that she should take some anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medication and just get these mood swings under control. He just wants to house to be peaceful and quiet again. He wants that loving wife back, the one who puts up with his quirks, cooks the meals and is always trying to please.

The main causes of back pain are lack of movement in your spine. As a writer about back pain, because I have suffered back pain myself with postural scoliosis in my spine; I will admit that it happens to us all, if we don't practice what we preach! None of us are perfect and I am no exception! Last night I went out to watch a movie that was being held in a local outdoor park in Vancouver. I sat on the grass with my legs crossed legged watching the movie on a big screen. Thankfully the grass was dry, the movie was good and I cycled home afterwards feeling the evening had been good!r
