This question has been asked in Psalm 144:3 Lord, what is man, that You take knowledge of him? Or the son of man, that You are mindful of him? What is man is a very important question. I believe if man knew his purpose and what he is to become then man would not be so quick to settle for much less than he is actually worth. How can you sell anything without first knowing what it’s worth?

I am going to answer each of these two questions separately. The first question “what is man” We will start by looking at the life of Jesus Christ. Why Jesus? Because the Bible says that Jesus is the first person to be resurrected with a spiritual body then at the first resurrection the people who belong to Jesus will also be given a new spiritual body. We can read this in 1 Corinthians 15:23, “But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming.”

The Bible teaches that God consists of three entity’s in one, The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit. Jesus is referred to as “The Son of God.” We can read this in Matthew 16:16, Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Even Satan’s demon’s recognized Jesus as the Son of God. Matthew 8:29, And suddenly they cried out, saying, “What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?” We can also see this in Mark 3:11, And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw Him, fell down before Him and cried out, saying, “You are the Son of God.”

So why is this important? This is all important because the Bible also calls us the sons of God! here are some of the verses that prove this point. Romans 8:14, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” Romans 8:19, “For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.” Galatians 3:26 [ Sons and Heirs ] For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

The answer to the first question of what is man? Or who are we? We are son’s of God! When we are resurrected our new spiritual bodies will have all the capabilities of the spiritual body of Jesus Christ. We read this in 1 John 3:2, “Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He (Jesus) is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.”

What will we become? When we are born in this world we are born with a “sin nature.” When we die there will be no more sin nature. The desires for fame, wealth, sex and any physical desires will all disappear. All the sins we committed in these bodies will appear very selfish and I’m sure we will all be very ashamed of our performance down here on earth.

According to the Bible our new spiritual bodies will be made of light. We can see evidence of this when Jesus took two of His disciples to the mountain and transfigured Himself in the presence of the apostles John and Peter. Matthew 17:2, “and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.”

The Bible says in Ephesians 1,13; that once you believe the good news of Christ at that time you will be sealed by the Holy Spirit never to lose your salvation. Also in 2 Timothy verse 20 the apostle Paul states that in heaven there are many different vessels with many different glories. I say this because the one verse that has motivated me to do good works is found in Daniel 12:3, “Those who are wise will shine as bright as the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever.”

Keeping this in mind let’s investigate more Bible verses too see if we can get a more bigger picture of what our new bodies will look like. There are some verses that really make my mind dream about what is too come. Habakkuk 3:4, “His brightness was like the light; He had rays flashing from His hand, And there His power was hidden.” Psalm 104:2, “Who cover Yourself with light as with a garment, Who stretch out the heavens like a curtain.” Ezekiel 1:13-14, “The living beings looked like bright coals of fire or brilliant torches, and lightning seemed to flash back and forth among them. And the living beings darted to and fro like flashes of lightning.”

Looking at the evidence we see that the The Father is called the Father of lights we can read this in James 1:17, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” Also in 1 Timothy 6:16, “who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.

We see that the God The Father is referred to as light now let’s look at Jesus. When Jesus took the apostles John and Peter to the mountain Jesus turned into light. We also know from reading the Book of Revelation that when Jesus rules and reigns over the planet earth there will be no need for the sun or the moon because Jesus will be the Light. We read this in Revelation 21:23, “The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.” and also in Revelation 22:5, “There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.”

God the Father and God the Son are referred to as light so it should not be a surprise to us that we are referred to as the son’s of Light. Here are three verses showing us this truth.

1 Thessalonians 5:5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.

John 12:36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them.

Luke 16:8 So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light.

So, To answer the question What is man? While we live we are sons of God. What shall we become? We shall become sons of light. Knowing this it gives the following verse more meaning. Jesus died on the cross and soon after appeared to his disciples. We read this in Luke 24:36-37, “Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, “Peace to you.” But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit.”

Since we are to become spirits of light here are a few facts about light that might get you thinking.

Mar 6, 2018 - The speed of light in a vacuum is 186,282 miles per second (299,792 kilometers per second), and in theory nothing can travel faster than light. In miles per hour, light speed is, well, a lot: about 670,616,629 mph. If you could travel at the speed of light, you could go around the Earth 7.5 times in one second. https://www.space.com › Science & Astronomy
