Prior to Jesus ascending to heaven, He told His disciples that He would send His Helper. John 14:26 tells us, "But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My Name" The Lord wants us to live and abide in Him. He wants to bless us with a life of righteousness and to give us every good gift He has for us. In order to do that He has given us His Spirit, the Holy Spirit. He has plays many roles in our lives.

1. He is our Guide into God's will

God didn't want us to be alone, so He give us His Spirit to lead us into everything that He has for us. The Holy Spirit will not force us to do anything because the Lord has given us free will. However, because the God loves us, He wanted the Holy Spirit to be our Guide. He wanted us to know His will and the path that He has prepared for us.

2. He is our Counsellor

The Holy Spirit is provided to us from the Lord to be our Counsellor (John 14:12-18). His Spirit comes along side us to help and teach us to know God and His will for our lives. Whatever we need, the Holy Spirit will pour out upon us. Whether it is encouragement, comfort, strength or any of His other riches, the Holy Spirit will supply it with His power and lift us up from our circumstances to see His plans and purposes.

2. He leads us to pray God's will

As we live a life close to God, His Spirit will give us sensitivity and may lead us in specific prayer (Romans 8:26). At times, He may place a burden or a specific need for someone else. Sometimes, it can be someone we know and at other times it may be a perfect stranger. Prayer is a powerful tool that the Lord uses to move in our and others lives. The Holy Spirit draws us into praying to encourage our faith and to see Him move in our's and other's lives.

3. He guides us to obtain God's promises

The Lord has general and specific promises for each and every one of us. As we lean on Him and His Spirit's leading, He will reveal those promises to us. He will plant that seed of promise within our heart and nurture and allow it to grow. Step by step the Holy Spirit will encourage us in the path that the Lord has laid and how to obtain His promises.

5. He directs us in all truth and searches the deep things of God

God is Truth (John 14:6) and He has given us His Spirit to be able to walk in that Truth. There are times when we are confronted with sin and we are immediately aware of it. However, there are other times when there are things confront us that appear good, but in fact are evil. It is during those times, the Holy Spirit will nudge on our heart and whisper to us, "Do not go that way." On the outside, the choice would seem like wisdom, if it were not for the Holy Spirit's warning within our hearts.

6. He warns and convicts us about sin

The Lord knows how sin hurts us, so He has given us the Holy Spirit to help us to avoid sin. The Holy Spirit comes and reveals the enemy's temptation to sin that is lurking before us. There are other times when we are aware that sin is before us, but we are having a hard time not being tempted to take the bait. The Lord has given us the Holy Spirit to give us a way out and to not choose the way of sin (I Corinthians 10:13).

The more that we seek Him, the greater sensitivity to His Spirit He will give us. The Lord has given us a piece of Him in His Spirit. He knows that we cannot navigate the Way alone and if we choose to lean on Him, He will make His Way, His plans and His heart to us through His Spirit.
