Written by Danica Susan
What should you do when you have rotator cuff injury or shoulder blade pain? Should you immediately take pain medications? If you are not aware of what to do, here are some treatment methods that you should keep in mind.
As you must know, the shoulders are the most mobile joints of the body. However, the movement is dependent on the tissues that are surrounding the shoulders. These certain tissues are called rotator cuff, made up of four muscles with tendons interconnecting from the collarbone, the upper arms and the shoulder blade. It is a common notion that shoulder blade pain and rotator cuff injury are problems in the neck but there are also other causes. The pain can be caused by a tear, an inflammation and other similar factors.
When you have a rotator cuff injury or shoulder blade pain, there are treatment methods that you can do at home to decrease the pain and the swelling before you go to your physician. You can apply ice packs over the affected area for 15 minute periods for at least three times during the day. This will help ease the pain as well as decrease the swelling in the affected area.
Just like any other injuries you should see a doctor so that the underlying cause will be known. There will be tests and diagnostics that will be performed such that an appropriate diagnosis is made. This is important so that the proper treatment methods will be done. One of the most common treatment methods for rotator cuff injuries and should blade pain is the use of ice. You should also make sure that you have enough rest to prevent further straining of the affected area which can cause more damage.
Pain control is also very important for rotator cuff injuries and shoulder blade pain. You can take over the counter medications like acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Pain can be debilitating so you need to address it immediately. However, you should take the right dosage of the medications and be careful if you are taking other medications because they might be contraindicated. If you are able to, you can apply a sling so that the shoulder will be able to rest properly. You have to apply it properly though and ask for help if you cannot do it on your own. You should not wear it for too long because it can lead to the joints becoming stiff thereby causing more damage.
After doing the treatment methods at home, you should immediately check with your physician so that he will help you determine the certain cause for the rotator cuff injury or the shoulder blade pain. There will be tests and procedures and these are necessary so that the proper treatment methods will be administered. Other than the ones that were mentioned above, you may be advised to undergo physiotherapy for the joints to recover, steroid medications may also be given to reduce inflammation and in some, surgery may be required to correct the damage.
When you know how to manage rotator cuff injury and shoulder blade pain even before going to a doctor, you are able to minimize complications as well as pave way for a fast recovery. To do that, keep these treatment methods in mind.
