• ...in the heart of every man is a desperate desire for a battle to fight, an adventure to live, and a beauty to rescue.
• Most messages for men ultimately fail. The reason is simple. They ignore what is deep and true to a man’s heart, his real passions, and simply try to shape him up through various forms of pressure.
• If a man is ever to find out who he is and what he is here for, he has got to take that journey for himself. He has got to get his heart back.
• Even if he can’t put it into words, every man is haunted by the question, “Am I really a man? Have I got what it takes…when it counts?”
• Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and go do that because what the world needs is people who have come alive.
The best way to get started with John Eldredge is to read his book, Wild at Heart: Discovering the Secret of a Man’s Soul. Eldredge’s major focus is enabling Christian men to return to their true masculinity, yet his principles, beliefs, and stories can apply to Christian and non-Christians alike. He wants men to live life the way God designed it to be—dangerous, passionate, alive, and free.
The premise of the book is that contemporary men are bored; they fear risk, and they refuse to pay attention to their deepest desires. Eldredge believes that if Christian men are going to change from a wimpy bunch of “really nice guys” to men who are made in the image of God, they must re-examine their preconceptions about who God is and recover their true “wild” hearts.
Eldredge claims that men often seek validation in venues like work or in the conquest of women. He urges men to take time out and come to grips with the “secret longings” of their hearts. Although Wild at Heart is written for men, it also helps women to understand men while in relationships.
Eldridge uses the backdrop of his personal outdoor experiences with his family to communicate the ideas associated with men searching for their true wildness of heart. Eldridge believes, “The only way to live in this adventure…with all its danger and unpredictability and immensely high stakes…is in an ongoing, intimate relationship with God.”
