Eric Butterworth was a theologian, philosopher, lecturer, and best-selling author on metaphysical spirituality. He inspired hundreds of thousands of people for over 50 years and began his daily radio broadcasts with the sentence, “You can change your life by altering your thoughts.” At times, his radio broadcasts went around the world.
Butterworth established three powerful Unity ministries—in Pittsburgh, Detroit, and New York City. At the Detroit Unity Temple, more that 2,000 people attended his Sunday Services each week. His weekly attendance in New York City grew to several thousand. Butterworth also originated the Spiritual Therapy Workshops, which he conducted for over 35 years. His devotees included people from all walks of life.
Butterworth attended Fresno State University and Capital University in Ohio, where he studied music. He began training for the ministry at Unity Village in Missouri during World War II and after the war, graduated from Unity Ministerial School. In 1968, he wrote the bestseller, Discover the Power Within You, which is considered a classic in the New Thought Spiritual Movement.
Eric Butterworth’s books have been translated into several languages. Every Sunday, Butterworth lectured at Carnegie Hall, then Town Hall, and since 1976, Avery Fisher Hall in New York City.
• Attitudes are the forerunners of conditions.
• Believe that you are always in the presence of limitless substance which you form and shape and release through your faith. Keep the high watch of Truth by knowing that, wherever you are and whatever your experience, you are an inlet and may become an outlet for the flow of God-substance.
• Don’t go through life, GROW through life.
• Fundamentalists believe Jesus was God becoming man. I believe that Jesus was man becoming God.
• Go within in a time of silence and get a renewed awareness of God as your resource, and then go about your business affairs in the strong consciousness of the omnipresence of substance.
• God is in us, not like a raisin in a bun but like the ocean in a wave.
• I am secure, for I know who I am: a richly endowed child of God. I am secure in all I do, for I know my oneness with the divine process. I am secure in all I have, for I know my treasure is in my mind, not in my things. I live my life from day to day as if God’s supportive substance were as exhaustless and dependable as the air I breathe, which it most certainly is.
• I tell you and you forget. I show you and you remember. I involve you and you understand.
• More important than learning how to recall things is finding ways to forget things that are cluttering the mind.
• On human levels of consciousness, one may emphasize getting and having as the prime goals, in spiritual consciousness he seeks the way of giving and being.
• Our job is not to set things right but to see them right.
• Prosperity is a way of living and thinking and not just money or things. Poverty is a way of living and thinking and not just a lack of money or things.
• Where you are in consciousness has everything to do with what you see in experience.
• You are a rich and creative spiritual being. You can never be less than this. You may frustrate your potential. You may identify with that which is less than what you can be. But within you now and always is the unborn possibility of a limitless experience of inner stability and outer treasure, and yours is the privilege of giving birth to it. And you will, if you can believe.
• Nothing stops the man who desires to achieve. Every obstacle is simply a course to develop his achievement muscle. It’s a strengthening of his powers of accomplishment.
• Prosperity is a way of living and thinking and not just money or things. Poverty is a way of living and thinking and not just a lack of money or things.
Oprah Winfrey says that Eric Butterworth’s book, Discover the Power Within You, “changed [her] perspective on life and religion.” She adds, “Eric Butterworth teaches that God isn’t up there. He exists inside each of us, and it’s up to us to seek the divine within.”
Who I am to argue with Oprah? We both agree that Discover the Power Within You is the best place to get started. The book opens with Chapter One, The Eternal Quest. According to Butterworth:
The hope of mankind today lies in the great undiscovered depths within. The time is at hand when men everywhere must forsake the fruitless search of the world at the circumference of being and embark upon a courageous quest into inner space. It is a very real world, and its depths can be sounded, its potency released. It is not a conquest but a bequest. It is not as much something within man as it is the deeper level of man.
In this book, Butterworth reviews the lessons of Jesus with the underlying philosophy that we are all the sons and daughters of God and that within us lies the power and divinity necessary to achieve any dream we can conceive of.
Butterworth writes, “Not one person in a million is living up to the best within him. The great wisdom of the ages still lies locked in the depths of man’s mental capacity; the great possibility of health and healing and eternal life still lies undiscovered in the depths of man’s inner life, and the great key to success and opulence still lies within man’s undiscovered potential.”
Many consider Discover the Power Within You to be a classic. Butterworth sees the divine within us all to be a hidden and untapped resource of limitless abundance. Exploring this “depth potential,” Butterworth outlines ways in which we can release the power locked within us and let our “light shine.”
