Bhikshuni Thubten Chodron, a nun in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, has studied and practiced Buddhism for more than thirty years. With a clear, practical, often humorous style, she teaches Buddhist philosophy and meditation worldwide. Her many Dharma books and her websites have helped countless people. Venerable Chodron is also the founder and Abbess of Sravasti Abbey, a community for Western monastics and lay students.
Ven. Chodron graduated from UCLA in 1971. After attending a meditation course with Ven. Lama Thubten Yeshe and Ven. Thubten Zopa Rinpoche, she traveled to Nepal and India to continue her Buddhist studies. She took her novice ordination in 1977 and received full ordination in Taiwan in 1986. Her teachers include His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Tsenzhap Serkong Rinpoche, and other Tibetan masters.
Ven. Chodron directed the spiritual program at Lama Tzong Khapa Institute in Italy, studied at Dorje Pamo Monastery in France, and was resident teacher at Amitabha Buddhist Center in Singapore and Dharma Friendship Foundation in Seattle before founding Sravasti Abbey in 2003. In addition to her own books, Ven. Chodron has edited and published the works of some of her teachers. Her articles are published in many anthologies and periodicals.
Venerable Chodron is active in inter-religious dialogue, especially with Catholics and Jews, and in dialogue with those of other Buddhist traditions. She was co-organizer of Life as a Western Buddhist Nun, an educational program for Buddhist nuns in Bodhgaya, India. She has participated in several Mind-Life Conferences in which His Holiness the Dalai Lama dialogues with Western scientists, and is active in prison work, corresponding with inmates and speaking to Buddhist groups in prisons across the country. She also leads workshops for social activists, showing how to be spiritually grounded while being engaged in benefiting others. Other books include Buddhism for Beginners, Blossoms of the Dharma, and Cultivating a Compassionate Heart: The Yoga Method of Chenrezig.
