Carmen is a licensed clinical social worker and Certified Alcohol Abuse Treatment Specialist (CAATS) and has worked in the mental health field since 1997. She is licensed in both Ohio and Virginia. She has extensive experience working with children and teens providing in-home crisis intervention, individual and family counseling. She has worked in youth service programs serving runaway teens and police stations; in adoption preservation programs and transitional living programs serving abused and neglected children.
She is recognized for her work with the United States Air Force and has worked in a variety of different programs since 2001. She has served as an exceptional family member program manager, foster care manager, family advocacy outreach manager, alcohol and drug abuse treatment therapist, victim advocate and sexual assault response program manager. She has extensive experience working with veterans, military families, active-duty soldiers, victims of domestic violence, child abuse and sexual assault, children and families with special needs, individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol addictions. She helped launch the Air Force Bystander Intervention Program training model that is found to be the most effective prevention tool for sexual assault prevention. She is formally trained by the Air Force in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), which is found to be the most effective way of treating PTSD among service members.
Carmen believes in the importance of integrating spirituality into counseling. She offers counseling for individuals, couples, children and teens. She believes in the importance of helping clients find the light that exists within them and she enjoys assisting others in the process of opening themselves up to God’s undying love and healing. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC).
Carmen is a native of Rolla, Missouri and has been a military spouse for the past 13 years and resides in Poquoson with her husband Rick and her only daughter, who is the light of her life. She enjoys martial arts, coaching, reading, traveling, playing basketball, tennis and spending time with her family.
