• Communion with God is a relationship, not a sensation.
• Dependence upon God makes heroes of ordinary people like you and me!
• God’s power under us, in us, surging through us, is exactly what turns dependence into unforgettable experiences of completeness.
• How would your day unfold if you believed that God wants your borders expanded at all times with every person and if you were confident that God’s powerful hand is directing you even as you minister?
• Neither is repentance a one-time act. It is a lifestyle, an ongoing commitment to keep putting aside our rebellion and receive God’s forgiveness.
• What if your very best friend were about to move away? What if you had only a few hours left to spend together? How valuable would that time be? Now imagine that your friend had something really important to say to you. “Listen carefully,” he might say. Would you pay better attention then? “I have to tell you something,” he might add. “I waited until now...but I can’t wait any longer.” Would you cling to his words, hoping to remember them forever? Now what if that person about to speak were Jesus? How closely would you listen to Him?
Bruce Wilkinson’s international bestseller, The Prayer of Jabez: Breaking Through to the Blessed Life, is clearly the place to get started. The book’s main character is named Jabez, a man from the Bible who is virtually unknown. In Chronicles 1, Chapter 4:
Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain.” So God granted him what he requested.
Jabez’s simple petition to God is the cornerstone of the book and has become a call to live a more “blessed life” for millions of readers. Dr. Wilkinson says he has recited this prayer every day for more than 30 years, and he testifies enthusiastically to the changes it has wrought in his own life.
Dr. Wilkinson writes in a very personal, conversational style and challenges readers to recite the Jabez prayer every morning and keep a record of the changes that occur. He says the power is not in the prayer itself, but “rather, the power is in what you believe will happen as a result of the prayer and the action you take.”
