Renowned author Mark Twain, famously quoted, "Kindness is a language, which the deaf can hear and the blind can see."
We see the power of money, fame, reputation, etc. and have this mind-set that these are the only things which have an impact. The materialistic world, has over the years, taken away the importance and the impact that simple acts of kindness can have. There is a certain, magic (I believe it is magic) that takes place, when we show kindness to each other. We may not be able to gauge the impact it has on us or others, immediately. But it most certainly has an enchanting effect.
I would not be surprised, if there are people out there, who question the importance of showing kindness. After all, we do live in a world, where none of us, get as much kindness as we deserve! Every action in the world today, comes with an attached expectation of something in return. But if you could just stop and try to do something, even if it is something really small, you'd realize what a great feeling it is. Kindness is one of those rare things, which has something for the giver and the receiver. Especially if it isn't done with an expectation of something in return!
Also, showing kindness is taking a different meaning these days. Kindness used to be, simply something that came from our hearts. But today, for some reason, people seem to confuse kindness as something that can only be done through acts of charity. So, if I give a part of my wealth away, I am assumed to be kind.
That isn't kindness. It is charity, philanthropy, generosity. But not kindness. Kindness, is that little bit of extra love for a child, a smile to that always lonely guy, the silent company to a friend who needs peace, giving away a piece of clothing which you would otherwise throw, etc. The list goes on.
Kindness, by definition, is the quality of being amiable, considerate and warm. I believe this deterioration has happened, not because people are no longer good at heart, but because we've somewhere forgotten about the importance of these acts of kindness.
And so, I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you, of the beauty of kindness and maybe even suggest a few simple acts, which you could practice in your routine life. I hope they warm your heart and give you renewed purpose.
So here it goes.
Importance of Kindness
1. Brings joy to others
Every single day, somebody brings a smile to our face or makes our day happy.
However, it isn't every day that we get to be the reason for someone else's smile. Or even if we do, we don't realise it.
2. Feels good too!
There is a particular kind of happiness, a very pure and endearing one, which we feel only when we show kindness to others. It is not the same as happiness that we get from other things. You need to feel it to believe it!
3. It is liberating
When you show kindness to others, it kind of liberates you from within. It frees a lot of pent up emotion and often becomes the gateway to newer and positive feelings.
4. Changes your views about yourself
Don't have good views about yourself?
No issues, go do something nice for someone! OR
Think you're way too good? Ask yourself, when was the last time you showed kindness to someone.
5. Creates Self-esteem
Kindness, gives you a renewed sense of confidence. This is because you are able to do something for someone else. It makes you realise that you are actually worth a lot more than you think.
6. Helps you become a better person
Most of the things that make us, who we are, are done by us unknowingly. When we start showing kindness and it becomes a part of our nature, we automatically become better, ethical and honourable in our conduct.
Given the reasons, why you should practise kindness; let's talk about the various acts of kindness that one can possibly practice. Now, I don't believe in grand gestures! For me, it's those simple things in life that make a lifetime of difference. So, my methods too, like my thinking are simple in nature but impactful.
Acts of Kindness (in everyday life)
• Wish a bright and happy "Good Morning" to someone every day. Even if it's a stranger!
• Give one of those extra special hugs to your friend or loved ones (or both).
• Help an elderly person carry something, maybe a heavy grocery bag!
• Give a book or some useful material to educate an underprivileged child or even an adult.
• Say "Please" and "Thank you". And mean it when you do so!
• Call up a friend with whom you've not spoken to in a while and just listen to them even if you don't know a thing about what they are saying.
• Forgive someone, even if they are at fault and not remorseful. Forgive them as an act of kindness.
• For one day, be the listener and not the speaker. Listen without judgement.
• Motivate someone to achieve something big. Make them feel alive.
• Leave a generous tip to an excellent waiter or server, after a good meal.
Even if you do one of these things every day, slowly and steadily you will notice the change it has on your own life. If you continue to remain frustrated or even simply keep cribbing, you'll never know what all amazing things can happen and are happening around you!
Also, please remember this. You only have so many chances in life to do some good. Why miss the golden opportunity to feel better about yourself?
Go on and be the best version of yourself!
