The assumption that someone can control your destiny is preposterous. Because if anyone was able to control the destiny of others then wouldn’t parents change the destiny of their children when they are suffering? Anyone would change the pain and suffering of their loved ones if that were the case, isn’t it?
What is destiny?

Destiny is everything that happens to a person throughout their entire life. This includes the formation of their body, their thoughts, their acts, the people they meet, etc. One’s entire life is an effect of their past life causes. We are the masters of our own destiny. If it is in your destiny to be a King, then you will be a King and similarly, if it is in your destiny to be a pauper, then you will be a pauper.

How does destiny come into effect?
There is nobody in this Universe that can alter the effects of destiny. Destiny is karma. And the rules of karma are such that the result of your karma will come into effect naturally and automatically.

When two atoms of hydrogen and one of oxygen come together, water automatically forms; there is nothing else that is involved in making this happen. This is the rule of karma, according to Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan. He explains that nobody makes karma rules; they are based on the laws of science and they are very precise.

So, the circumstances come together to give the result of karma and this is what we term our destiny. Nobody has any control over it or has the power to give the result of that karma. This is similar to humans or any other living beings having no control over the ripening of mangoes or the growth of a prickly cactus plant. All that you can do is simply observe how it evolves. In short, there is no middle person.
“If you plant a cactus, you cannot expect it to bear mangoes. You get the fruit of the tree you plant. In the same way, the consequence of the karma you have to suffer depends on the type of karma that was bound in the first place,” as cited by Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan.

This also means that even God is not the doer or the giver. Only Nature runs the world.
How are karmas bound?
The common belief is that karmas are sown through one’s visible actions, but this is not the case. Karmas are sown through one’s intent and not outer action. It is the intent that projects your destiny and predetermines the actions for the future life! The intentions of one’s past life are the causes that bring forth the effects in the current life.
Now that we know how destiny is determined, is there a way to improve our future? Yes, there is! To improve your future destiny, you need to keep your present intent clean and pure, thereby binding merit karma.

You can do this by:
Nurturing the intent that ‘May no living being be hurt to the slightest extent through my mind, speech and body.’ Recite this sentence every morning, five times, with sincerity. This is one of the highest intentions. When we don’t hurt anyone, then no suffering will come to us.
And if, for whatever reason, someone is hurt by us, then ask for forgiveness (pratikraman). When you do pratikraman, you are reversing the hurt caused to any living being.

The more you abide by these two techniques, the better type of merit karma you are charging. Merit karmas mean a happier and better future life. Your intentions only determine your future life, thereby determining your destiny.
Thus, no one can control your destiny; yes, you can certainly sow good intentions, which shall create a happier and brighter destiny.
