Are you fully alive or already half dead?

We humans invest huge amounts of energy, time and resources trying to create a sense of certainty and security. Uncertainty can terrify us because it threatens the control we believe we have over life, and so we cling to those things that are supposed to bring us certainty, and refuse to acknowledge that they will all pass one day.

We try to create certainty in the body, in our beliefs, our traditions, our culture, our institutions, our achievements, our children, and our religions. We pay lip service to the truth that life is change, and yet we live as though this was not true. We hold on and we resist, as we try to insulate ourselves from the wave of change that flows through our our lives.

As appealing as it may seem, being attached to certainty can rob you of your aliveness, your openness to new experience, opportunities for growth, your capacity for creative innovation, your sense of wonder and the ability to still your mind.

Living with uncertainty allows you to move into a sense of wonder and gratitude for each of life’s gifts that come in the moment. How along is it since you marvelled at the miracle of movement, a smile, sunlight through mist, the gurgling of a mountain stream, a baby’s laughter, the gentle wisdom of an elder, the exquisite sensations of your lover’s touch, the magic of tears, or a warm breeze on your face?

To feel sensations in your body, to be capable of laughter, tears, love, gratitude, joy, or any of a thousand feelings! To be able to think, imagine, create, daydream, compose music, write a letter, plan a business! What an awesome privilege all this is. Just to be alive is such an adventure. Do we really appreciate it all or are we busy chasing after some illusions of security and certainty?

In your childhood you wondered at everything – at the wings of a butterfly, the swirling patterns of flowing water, the lilt of someone’s laughter, the starry night, the hiss and fizz of fireworks, the wagging of a dog’s tail, the wind in the trees, your mother’s tears, the ways you could move your tongue, and on and on. Sadly we lose so much of the sense of wonder as we become adults, yet its loss diminishes our humanity.

In the bible we are told, “Unless you become as little children, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.” The endearing qualities of children, such as trust, delight, freshness, curiosity and energy are once again enlivened as you let go of your demands for certainty and control.
Is it possible to live a responsible adult life with the heart of a child?

Do you have the time and the desire to be deeply moved by life?

Can you let go of the past and the future enough for that to happen?

Do you really want to be fully alive in your life?

Letting go of certainty is the invitation to risk it all so that you can be renewed and transformed. Is it worth it to you? We call you to a world of wonder, aliveness, creative vision, purpose and eternal happiness. If you are ready for it you can step into a level of experience that is timeless. You can break the limitations of time, space and the physical sense of life, and enter the atmosphere of eternity.
