I'm going to do it! How many times have you told yourself you're going to do something and then a week goes by? Then a month? Maybe even a year and you still haven't done it? It's not that you don't want to do it, but life gets in the way…or so you tell yourself.
So, what's stopping you? Do you think you can do it? Do you believe you can do it? Do you actually take action to do it? I loved school. Maybe not in middle school or even high school (although I loved, loved, loved math class). In college, I found more of who I was and what I excelled at. I don't like studying for subjects that don't interest me, but for the ones I do, I can become a little obsessed. A few minutes finishing something would turn into an hour perfecting a project.
I liked that things were due, and I was responsible to the deadline. I would make sure it was done…no matter how long I had to stay up to do it. I've always thought I was pretty good at follow through, but it would be on my own time. I get it done, but instead of getting it done today, it might be next week. I would tell myself, It doesn't have to be done today. Procrastination at its best.
College worked great for me. Someone else decided the deadline, and I would make sure to have it finished by then. Now, in order for me to accomplish things in the time I want, I have to set deadlines. It CANNOT be open-ended. I've found without a deadline date, but one week turns into a month. I finish the project a lot later than I want to…and then wonder where the time went and why it took me so long. I heard someone say this the other day, and it resonated with me….Without a deadline, it's just an idea.
Do you find yourself working toward one thing for so long and never finishing it? It's left as a work in progress. You want to finish it and move onto the next thing, but somehow don't manage to do it. It's a vicious cycle like a hamster on a wheel, round and round you go. Do you really want to achieve success?
So whether it's writing a book, starting a business, becoming a better marketer, or creating time in your day for yourself, start today. Make a deadline and take steps everyday to move toward that date. Stop putting it off and making excuses why you aren't getting things done, you're not succeeding, or nothing ever works out. Create your calendar by blocking off a certain amount of time in your day to work on it. Mark this time on every day until it is finished. No more excuses.
You will accomplish so much more when you make this time. You will feel better, and you'll be able to move onto your next achievement. If this is something you struggle with, get someone to help you. Whether it's a friend, a professional organizer, or a coach your time is worth money. Don't waste it by going round and round and feeling like you're never getting anything done. If you aren't creating the time in your day to accomplish your goals, then you might be wasting it. Work toward your goals, and success will find you quicker than you might think!
