How to stop lusting after woman or any other thing?
People have struggled with how to overcome lusting of the flesh since they first fell from grace and walked the dusty roads of this earth, hence the Bible states, "The spirit is indeed willing, but the flesh is weak." (Matthew 26:41b KJV). What is lust? A dictionary definition would be: "1) intense or unrestrained sexual craving 2) an overwhelming desire or craving." Lust is about pleasing oneself and can lead to "unwholesome actions to fulfill one's desires" with little or no regard for the consequences.
Here is how to overcome the sin of lusting in 3 steps:
1. You must be saved
This is pretty much a "no brainer". Obviously, to walk holy before God and to stop lusting or doing any other sin you must be saved. You need a new nature that does not sin and cannot sin. That's right, I said "cannot sin." The new spirit cannot sin because it is born of incorruptible seed, born of God according to 1 Peter 1:23 and 1 John 3:9, but the capacity to sin is still possible through the unrenewed soul of the person. We are a spirit, soul and body. The soul (mind, will and emotions) needs to be sanctified (set apart) and renewed by the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit.
2. You must be filled with the Holy Spirit
If you have tried in your own strength to overcome lust and any other sin in your life then you probably failed. You need the power of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues as recorded in Acts 2:4. The Holy Spirit is to be your Comforter, Helper and Intercessor among other things. I strongly suggest praying in tongues at least an hour a day. Why? Because the Holy Spirit prays the perfect prayer for any weaknesses you may have including lust. Romans 8:26,27 clarifies this truth.
3. You must renew your mind with the Word of God
Take three scripture promises that cover your problem of lust, gluttony, smoking or whatever vice you may have and speak these three promises out of your mouth each day as much as possible. Why? As you diligently speak forth God's Word you will break open and pulverize that inner rock stronghold of sin (lust) because the Word of God is like a hammer according Jeremiah 23:29 and it will break open and pulverize any rock of sin in your life. Below is a scripture based declaration you can start declaring daily to see results over lust or any other sin in your life:
Your declaration of faith to overcome lusting and other sins
"I command you body and soul in Jesus' name to get in line with the Word of God and be holy for God is holy. Sin will not have dominion over me. I am a new creature in Christ and old things are passed away, all things have become new. Through Christ I am more than a conqueror over sin. I hate sin with a perfect hatred and everything I do and say is inspired by God therefore in Jesus' name I refuse to lust after people or anything."
Positive results will manifest quicker the more time you spend daily speaking this scriptural based declaration.
Scriptures used for the above faith declaration: Philippians 2:9-11; Romans 6:14; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 8:37 and Psalm 97:10.
Remember to always walk in love and forgiveness towards everyone, always obeying God's Word so you don't hinder His perfect will for your life. But if you don't read His Word how will you know what to obey? Please read His Word daily so you will know what to obey, thus fulfilling His will for your life.
