If you are considering alcohol treatment you have made a smart decision. This means you recognize you may have a problem with alcohol. Recognizing a problem may exist is the first major hurdle one must overcome when battling substance abuse issues.
As a counselor for both in-class and online alcohol classes I always address the issue of a drinking problem with my students. A personal evaluation is an intricate part of every course. After discussing the different types of drinking patters and behaviors I ask my students honestly to assess if they have a problem and whether they need further alcohol treatment.
Keep in mind that virtually all of my students have had at least one alcohol-related incident and most-likely been mandated by the court to attend the alcohol awareness class. In my experience, the majority of those who usually take an alcohol class with a court-mandate are minors sent by their parents.
A good alcohol class, including online alcohol classes, is a great place to start with any alcohol treatment program. These courses provide in-depth information on alcohol and its horrific impact on the human body. But remember, this is only a first step.
A second crucial step when going through alcohol treatment is to have support. Quitting an addiction is difficult. Quitting by oneself it is almost impossible. That is why so many have found that joining a group like Alcoholics Anonymous, a crucial crutch to keep an alcoholic sober during times of craving.
If the drinking problem is chronic an in-house stay in rehab might be a necessary step in the alcohol treatment program. Whatever the level of the problem, if you or someone you care about has a drinking problem I urge you to seek help immediately.
