So I guess it’s time to debunk some of the money goal myths like – “Money will change me” or “Success will change the person who I am now” by talking about a very successful footballer who has not changed a single iota since he was a young teenager pursuing his dream of becoming a professional footballer.
Football or “soccer” as it is sometimes called is a major passion of mine. I enjoy both playing and watching the beautiful game. I am a dedicated Manchester United fan. Manchester United is one of the wealthiest and most widely supported football teams in the world. The top footballers in the world are super stars and earn massive amounts of money. They are like celebrities now, especially in England. They get fame and fortune at a young age.
One of United’s star players is a 37 year old footballer called Paul Scholes. He is a remarkable world class footballer. He burst onto the scene at Manchester United in the mid-ninety’s and has gone on to make over 700 appearances for club and country. Paul just loves the game. He is very much a family man. After games, he gets showered and goes home to his family. He avoids the media and the headlines. He just enjoys the simple pleasures in life. Success has not changed Paul Scholes.
Herein lays the secret- Money won’t make us something different than what we are. If people are generous by nature then they will continue to be generous when they have money. If people are greedy by nature, then more money will make them greedier. We need to change our mindset and thoughts about successful people to begin to model and replicate successful people instead of being envious of them.
An Irish comedian called Tommy Tiernan made a joke before about rich people that I feel embodies our mindset on how we really feel about successful people. Tommy is from the same part of Ireland that I am from, Galway. He is very controversial but he has become very successful. He told a story one day about buying a new Mercedes Benz. He said after he purchased it, he took it for a spin. He drove past a shop and saw his own reflection in the window. He looked at the reflection and cursed the driver under his breath “That rich guy doesn't deserve the Mercedes, he doesn't work as hard as I do” is a cleaned up version of what Tommy joked about. It wasn't so much a joke as much as an accurate social commentary on how we all view rich people. We need to change our thinking if we want to be successful. Some people think that the concept of changing your mindset is all “hocus pocus”. I think that if we begin to look at things with new eyes, then we can really start to change our results.
T.Harv Eker (Author Secrets of the Millionaire Mind) says that our “Thoughts lead to feelings. Feelings lead to actions.
