Reaching a milestone birthday has a way of focusing the mind! And what I’ve been focusing on as a result is the wonderful people I have in my life – the people who support me on an intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual level.
But showing appreciation for those who share in and enhance your life journey – your dance – is a worthwhile exercise at any time. And one that you can cultivate so that it becomes a habit that serves you and others well on an on-going basis. You don’t have to leave it till you hit a milestone birthday!
I know that I could not be the dancer I am, able to support others in the way I do without the wonderful support of other people. And I know the same is true for you too.
Some of those supporters get paid financially – people like cleaners and gardeners for your home, family and child care support; and admin assistants, technical support, book-keepers, designers and mentors for your business. But many are unpaid and often unseen. They do not ask for or receive financial reward for their support. They give because they want to or when asked.
Do you?
Because in my experience, the majority of us do like to give when we can – it makes us feel good. But we forget this when it’s our turn to ask!
So get good at recognizing where you need support, and ask for it. Nothing will change for the better until you do – in fact, things will often get worse!
And once you ask for it be prepared to accept support gladly. Do not judge yourself as inadequate or feel guilty – these thoughts and feelings do not serve you well.
Further questions that will serve you well:
•Who do/can you go to for support?
•Around the home, with your family and in your business?
•How can you make this happen?
•What do/will you get from them over and above what you expect or ask for?
•How can you show them your appreciation? What can you do today to surprise and delight them?
Feeling real appreciation for all you have and are, and demonstrating that appreciation to those who support you is one of the most worthwhile things you can do. Because you’re acknowledging that you’re on a journey together – a lifelong dance – and you’re making a deeper connection that helps you both feel great.
