Eye infections could be a symptom of COVID-19

As coronavirus continues to spread throughout the world, further possible and confirmed symptoms of the disease have been identified. Aside from the most common symptoms (fever, shortness of breath, and dry cough), coronavirus has also shown up as joint pain, digestive problems, skin rashes and eye infections.

How is COVID-19 related to the eyes?:

Coronavirus is thought to spread from person to person mostly by respiratory droplets when somebody coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in nearby people's mouths or noses, and possibly spread to your eyes if you touch them with unwashed hands. This is why it is recommended to wash your hands before you touch your face.

Conjunctivitis:

Studies show that doctors believe 1 to 3 percent of the coronavirus patients will get conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the outermost layer of the white part of the eye and of the inner surface of the eyelid. It usually affects both eyes and makes them look pink or reddish. Symptoms may include pain, itching, and swelling of the white part of the eye. Inflammation is due to some bacterial or viral infection including COVID-19. It is the mucous membrane that are most susceptible to virus transmission. Therefore, besides taking the basic precautionary measures, you should also protect your eyes. This includes not touching your eyes with unwashed hands and wearing goggles or face shields if you are in contact with an infected person.
