Dealing with setbacks, either in your personal life or your professional one, can be a challenging time.
Many hide themselves away, taking time to lick their wounds before emerging like a butterfly, ready to tackle life’s problems head-on.
Whereas others refuse to be beaten and fight for what they believe they deserve.
Then there are the few who find it almost impossible to recover from certain setbacks and do not know how to move on with their lives.
Whichever category you fit in to, there are several strategies that you can put in place to help you deal with life’s setbacks more effectively.
Don’t bury your head in the sand
If you are one of those people who refuse to acknowledge any setbacks or failures, preferring instead to put on the blinkers and carry on as normal, you should know that this is not the healthiest way to deal with setbacks in life.
The first step in dealing with a setback is in taking ownership of that setback.
Why is this important?
Because how else will you learn from your setbacks and come out stronger on the other side?
Don’t look for someone to blame
It can be tempting when something goes wrong to attribute blame to someone else, often someone who is close to you, such as a family member, friend or work colleague. Again, this has no benefit in helping you overcome the setback but can lead to feelings of resentment and anger, both of which are not conducive to recovery.
Instead, accept that some life occurrences just happen, and sometimes for no reason at all.
Don’t dwell but do give yourself time
Depending on the severity of the setback, your mind, body, and soul will need a certain amount of time to heal and feel strong enough to face the world again.
Give yourself time to recover from a setback, allow yourself to grieve, and if needed, shut yourself off for a little while. However, it is important to recognize when enough is enough and you should get yourself back out there.
Dwelling on a past problem or mistake will not aid your recovery.
Don’t be afraid of a new challenge
Making the decision to move on with your life after a setback can be a tough one, but instead of simply going back to your normal routine and daily life, it can be beneficial to set yourself a new challenge. Push yourself outside of your normal comfort zones.
This could be by aiming for the next step career-wise, such as training to be a DNP for registered nurses or by signing up for an evening class in a skill you have always wanted to learn but have been too fearful to try until now.
Don’t let a setback dictate your future
A setback does not need to mean a step back; not if you don’t let it become one. Everyone experiences setbacks or failures in their lives. Some more than others, but it doesn’t, and shouldn’t, affect how you live your life moving forward.
Accept your setback for what it is. Deal with it. Move on. Bigger and brighter than before.
In times of weakness or self-doubt, simply remember the well-known phrase; setbacks pave the way for comebacks. Never a truer sentence was said.
