The biggest star Scarlett Johansson Clarifies Her Position On Casting while defending herself from her given previous statements, where she stated that a person should characterize and portray anyone he/she wants for the sake of art, freedom, creativity and expression.
An year ago, Scarlett decided to exit her upcoming film Rub and Tug for which she was casted as a transgender man, where in an interview she spoke about politically correct saying “she should and must be allowed to play any person she wants”.
The question I was answering in my conversation with the contemporary artist, David Salle, was about the confrontation between political correctness and art, I personally feel that, in an ideal world, any actor should be able to play anybody and art, in all forms, should be immune to political correctness. That is the point I was making and I recognize that in reality, there is a wide-spread discrepancy amongst my industry that favours Caucasian, cisgendered actors and that not every actor has been given the same opportunities that I have been privileged to. I continue to support, and always have, diversity in every industry and will continue to fight for projects where everyone is included.
According to the actress, she recognizes the fact that she has been afforded a privileged position, in which she has more roles on account of her skin color as well as her biological sex. Scarlett went on to say that she’ll continue to support diversity on screen as much as she can. Broadly paraphrasing the actress, Scarlett said any person should be given the opportunity to play whomever they want, and art should be completely “immune to political correctness.” Furthermore, Scarlett clarified some of her other comments in which she stated that not every person has the same opportunities as another.
In light of recent interviews held and ethical questions raised surrounding I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project,Johansson said in a statement to Out Magazine at that time as cited by US Weekly.
Rub and Tug is set to be directed by Rupert Sanders, who also helmed Ghost in the Shell, which came under fire for whitewashing the protagonist, played by Johansson in a black wig. In the manga on which the movie was based, the main character was Japanese.
Scarlett claims few of her statements were copied and controvised whereas few were spoken by her, which is true that she claims to play any role she wishes to despite what her fans and other people think of her, maybe that is a step to freedom you can say.
