Inexpensive DIY Alternatives To Overpriced Skin Care Products

Skin care can be extremely expensive - some products can cost more than $100 for a tiny tube! You may think that the price for clear, healthy skin is high, but it actually is not. All the expensive, overpriced products you find in the store can be easily replaced by inexpensive DIY alternatives. An added bonus is that with DIY skin care, you don’t run the risk of putting toxic chemicals on your body.

We’ve compiled a list of DIY alternatives for all types of skin care - moisturizer, facial washes, face & body scrubs, face masks and more!

#1: Moisturizer (face and body)

Moisturizers can be expensive, but even a relatively cheap, high-quality moisturizer can cost you $50. If you have chronically dry skin and need to moisturize twice a day, you’ll probably need to buy a new bottle of lotion every few weeks. Instead of spending all that money on a moisturizer, make your own for under $20.

You’re going to need ½ a cup of olive oil, ½ a cup of coconut oil and a ¼ cup of beeswax pellets. Mix them all in a large jar and put the jar into a saucepan on a stove. Fill the saucepan up with water until the water level reaches about ¾ up the length of the jar. Leave it on the stove on low heat for about 5 minutes (until all the ingredients have melted). Let it cool for a bit, then whisk it until the texture is thick and creamy.

Keep in mind that with this recipe, you won’t need much moisturizer to hydrate your skin. Use less than you usually would - a small dot will suffice for your face.

#2: Facial wash

A high-quality facial wash can cost you anywhere from $30-$60. Facial washes that target specific issues, such as oily or dry skin, acne, aging skin etc, can cost even more. Instead of spending so much money on facial washes, make your own at home! The best part about this recipe is that you can alter it slightly to make it suitable for any skin type.

You will need ¼ cup of castile soap, ¼ cup of aloe vera gel, ¾ teaspoon of olive oil, 20-30 drops of Vitamin E oil, and essential oils. The essential oils can vary based on your skin type - use tea tree oil for oily skin and acne, lavender for dry skin and jasmine for aging skin.

Mix all the ingredients together thoroughly and you’re done!

#3: Face masks

No matter what type of skin you have, we have a DIY face mask recipe for you! All the ingredients can be found in your kitchen. Be sure to cleanse your face thoroughly before applying a mask.

For dry skin: Mash up a banana and apply it all over your face and neck. Leave it for 10 to 20 minutes, then rinse it off with cold water and gently pat your face dry.

For oily skin: Crack an egg and separate the white from the yolk. Beat the egg white and apply it to your face and neck for about 30 minutes. Rinse it off with cold water and gently pat your face dry.

For blackheads: Crack an egg and separate the white from the yolk. Apply a thin layer of egg white to the afflicted areas, then place a layer of clean tissue over it. Coat the tissue with another layer of egg white. Place another layer of clean tissue over it. Continue repeating this until you have 3-4 layers of tissue and egg white over the afflicted areas. Wait for about 30 minutes, then peel the mask off. The blackheads will come out with it.

For dull skin: Mix ½ a cup of hot water with ⅓ a cup of oatmeal. Then add 2 tablespoons of yogurt, 2 tablespoons of honey and 1 egg white. Mix thoroughly, then apply to your face and leave it for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water and gently pat your face dry.

#4: Body/facial scrubs

Why would you spend more than $50 on a body or facial scrub when you could make one at home with two simple ingredients: sugar and coconut oil. Just add some sugar to coconut oil, mix, then rub it on your face and body in circular motions. The sugar acts as an exfoliant while the coconut oil moisturizes your skin. Rinse it off and watch your skin glow.

You can substitute coconut oil with other oils, such as olive oil or almond oil.
