Friedreich's Ataxia? Have you heard this name before or have you seen anyone diagnosed with this disorder? Friedreich's Ataxia is one more name in the list of neurodegenerative diseases. It is described as genetic, progressive, neurodegenerative movement disorder, starts between 10 and 15 years usually before the age of 25. It is a common form of inherited ataxia. It comprises the variety of neurological problems, cardiomyopathy, diabetes, scoliosis etc. FRDA is mostly associated with cardiomyopathy, a disease of cardiac muscle which may lead to heart failure. It is caused by abnormalities (mutations) in the FXN gene which codes for frataxin, a protein. This protein is required for proper functioning of mitochondria (energy producing parts of our cells). In People with Friedreich's Ataxia both copies of the FXN gene are abnormal that are not able to produce adequate amounts of frataxin. Due to this tissues which are dependent on cellular energy production (nerve and heart cells) start to degenerate.
