Inspired by the now- defunct reality television show Starting Over, a show that featured the struggles of regular women and their journeys to get there while being guided by life coaches, the seed for Tiya Cunningham-Sumter’s pursuit of a career as a life coach was planted in 2003. She knew that, as a person who has always reveled in excitement at the thought of seeing others happy, this was the career for her. Friends and family would say that she has always been their “unofficial” life coach, offering words of encouragement and motivation to help them reach their goals.
But before becoming an official life coach, Sumter had few obstacles of her own to overcome before chasing this dream, starting with a medical condition that seriously threatened her health in 2004. Soon after overcoming this obstacle, Sumter faced another hurdle: How could she pursue a career in coaching to help make others happy when she herself was unhappy with the dead-end job she was working? Although she had obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Illinois University in Journalism, her then career was a far cry from what she’d envisioned for herself after college. Sumter soon landed a position with a prestigious advertising agency.
With a new career and a new attitude, Sumter was available to focus on pursuing her passion of life coaching in her spare time. Shortly after, she enrolled in the iPEC Coaching Institute, one of the country’s premier life coach training organizations, where she received full accreditation as a life and relationship coach in 2006. Since then, she has coached countless individuals and couples on achieving their personal, professional, family and relationship goals, guided by her simplistic, yet realistic motto: Our lives tell a story; It’s up to you what story you will tell.
As the founder and sole practitioner of her own coaching establishment, Life Editing, in Chicago, Ms. Sumter conducts life coaching sessions and workshops for a variety of clients, including married couples, families, career-driven individuals and others. The Life Editing concept is about rewriting your life to reflect your dreams. Also in the works for Sumter and Life Editing is an inspirational book for couples.
Mrs. Sumter has been happily married for 10 years to college sweetheart Kenneth Sumter. The couple met in 1990 and married in 1998. Kenny and Tiya have been blessed with two daughters, Kyler and Kelsi.
Sumter is a member of Family of Faith Community Church, where she is the Director of the Women’s Ministry.
