My personal journey to health began at the age of 25 when I was told that I had a condition known as “hypothalamus amenorrhea”. This diagnosis came after years of expensive and ineffective medical testing as well as drug therapies for irregular menses, anemia, and thyroid fluctuations. As is usually the case with people who seek help from professionals in the western-based medical field, I followed the advice of my doctors and thought my diligent adherence to their prescribed medication would eventually solve my health problems. What I found was that my symptoms improved somewhat but my health, most definitely, did not.
By the time I reached the age of 30, I had developed severe allergies to certain foods, a compromised immune system, osteoporosis in my spine and in both of my hips and my initial health problems were still a problem. Out of sheer necessity from the debilitating effects of my allergic reactions to foods, I decided to take control of my own health. I was simply sick and tired of being sick and tired. This is where my path to wellness truly began. What I found to be of greatest importance was not what the doctors had focused on, but on what they did not focus on. Though well-intentioned, my doctors never made the connection between my stressful lifestyle and my medical condition. My adrenals were shot and my cortisol levels had been unusually high from the age of 12 on through my 30’s. I was a mother and a wife. I juggled full-time duties for two non-profits in different states and a new school that I had co-founded and was co-directing. I was literally in “fight or flight” mode for almost 15 years.
I was high energy and fueled by all the wrong foods. I excused my lack of inward attention on the sheer fact that I loved my service to others, a fact that is still very deeply ingrained in me and brings me a tremendous sense of happiness. The problem is not what I did but rather, how I did it. Somewhere along the line I had forgotten that I was important too. I was doing work so important to those I genuinely cared for that I overlooked the many ways in which it was in direct conflict with my own health. The conditions I developed were nothing more than my body trying to speak to me the only way that it could. It forced me to pay attention and wake up.
I now believe there is no better judge of what is going on with your body than yourself. I decided to take charge of my own health and have spent years researching, learning, and applying the knowledge based in the healing properties of food, and lifestyle practices to my own life. I have regained my health in almost all the areas that were of concern. Most importantly, I have regained a connection with the part of me that felt I had no choices, and have learned that my body truly can heal itself, and that I can do what I love and still have time for myself.
We all know stress is not a good thing, and yet because it is a part of everyone’s life, we simply don’t pay attention to it as a possible health risk. In order to achieve the life we want to have, we must create a body and a mindset that can keep up and support this desire. Health is not just a matter of what we put in our mouths, it is also a matter of the what we feed our minds and how we interact with the world around us.
My hope is to support, help and encourage people who want to improve their health and the quality of their life in a way that addresses the real issue. It is my deepest wish to help others heal this place of disease and to help make the connection between our minds, our hearts, and our bodies.
Success is not measured by what you have, but how well you have lived. My intention is to help others get to this place of health…to this place of success.
