Nora Hernandez is originally from Honduras. She attended college in her native country, where she studied Business Administration. Nora then moved to the United States to continue her education. She resided in New York and studied English as a Second Language and Human Services at Bronx Community College.
In 1991, Nora moved from New York City to Wendell, NC. Nora joined the North Carolina Cooperative Extension as Program Coordinator for Hispanic / Latino Outreach community. Nora recruited Hispanic/Latino community leaders to work together with other citizens to identify and resolved problems in their communities.
Nora also established a Speaker’s Bureau to expand the leaders’ knowledge of community education, health care, child care, finances, and other issues relating to community and child advocacy. Her leadership in helping parents and community members to become involved was recognized as a valuable tool by Smart Start, Wake County Human Services, North Carolina A&T State University and other community members and business leaders.
Though the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, the NCSU, and A&T State University and MHA/NC, Nora received extensive training in adult education, youth development, leadership, community development and Mental Health. She is also a life coach and outstanding leader in the field of motivation and personal development.
In 1999, Nora founded The Latin American Women’s Consortium (LAWC), a volunteer organization whose purpose is to strengthen the economic, emotional, physical, social and intellectual development of the Latinas in North Carolina.
She is also the founder of the Latin American Women’s Excellence Award. These annual awards recognize the Latina women for their commitment and contributions to the Hispanic/Latino community. The awards are given in the categories of: Professional Woman or Business Owner, Leadership, Single Mother, Friend, Juventud Latina and Mental Health Advocacy.
Nora has served as part of the Triangle United Way Starring Committee, Wake County Public School System Superintendent Advisory Council in NC, Smart Start Planning Educational Initiatives in NC, and Wake County Human Services Community Initiatives Committees in NC.
As a member of The Nasher Museum of Art Advisory Committee, she helped in one of the mayor exhibition in NC. The Golden Age Spain, El Greco (1541-1614) and Velázquez (1599-1660) Exhibition. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) and the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University (NMA) are organizing an international loan exhibition, El Greco to Velázquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III.
In 2006 she joined The Mental Health Association of NC (MHA/NC) as the Director for The Hispanic/Latino Outreach. Through her leadership she has established the MHA/NC - LAWC Advisory Committee, which serves as a voice for the community regarding mental health needs and services for the Hispanic/Latino population. This Advisory Committee also serves as a voice for Latinas in NC, regarding the Latin American Women’s Consortium activities and the organization development.
In 2010 she founded The Center for Personal Development (SSP), an institution dedicated to providing individuals, organizations, and companies with information and tools they need to discover and reach their own potential through motivational and personal development through three important tools: Reflection, application, and implication, further developing our inner power of “being, thinking, and acting”
