My Past...Why I Am Committed to Helping People Find Peace with Food:
I'd like to tell you a little bit about me and my personal experience to help you to know me a bit better and give you a sense of how I can help you to create the change you seek in your life. If you'd like to know more or would like to share your story with me I welcome hearing from you.
When I was a little girl I lived in a home that was very confusing and stressful.
While I didn't realize what I was doing at the time, I naturally began increasingly to eat sweets and treats to give me some sense of peace and nurturing.
Unfortunately that coping strategy added a few extra pounds to my naturally developing tween body which led to judgment and ridicule and ultimately to my parents placing me on calorie restricted diets.
What was even more unfortunate was that, because the underlying stressor of the environment in which my brother and I were being raised never changed, my need for the treats that made me feel better grew, rather than lessened. This led to even more judgment from outside and more shame within.
Despite many positive experiences and opportunities during that time in my life, my overall memory of my adolescence and young adult years is that of me feeling insecure and awkward in my body, obsessing over calories, fat grams and my weight, and careening from one failed diet to another – always starting a new one, or revisiting an old one on Monday morning and always falling apart and going off the rails by the weekend if not by Monday afternoon.
I believed with every ounce of my body that if I could just get a grip on food everything else would fall into place and I would finally be happy and at peace.
On the path to that elusive peace and happiness I tried the aforementioned countless diets to be sure, but I didn’t stop there! I tried various exercise programs and classes. I tried medications and a variety of legal and street drugs. I tried cleanses and fasts. I tried psychiatry and made many visits to many doctors, always coming away with a prescription in one hand and a diet plan in the other, and that old familiar feeling of despair in the pit of my stomach.
I would return home from these failed attempts at ‘getting a grip’ so filled with loneliness and feeling so stuck that I would head straight for the cupboards and the fridge and fill myself beyond full. Often during these times I’d imagine that if I took one more bite I might just explode, and sometimes, such was my need, I’d keep on eating anyway.
Fortunately for me, my frustration with feeling so ashamed of myself and so insecure drove me to keep on trying to find an answer that would truly make me happy. What I came to realize all those years ago, and it may be hard to imagine that I didn’t really understand this before, was that I ate when I was anxious. I also realized I ate when I was sad and lonely and frustrated and excited and happy and just about any old time I had a feeling of any kind.
I also came to realize that while I was seemingly completely out of control where food was concerned I could change the things that were making me feel sad or scared or angry in the first place. And if I changed those things or my approach to them, I could change how anxious I felt and that had the amazing side-effect of changing my urgent need for food to cope. Through the help of a counselor who understood that there was much more to my relationship with food than laziness or a lack of willpower, I was able to begin to put the pieces of the puzzle of my food and weight issues together and arise, complete, solid and happy.
My own struggles with food and weight loss, coupled with the incredible difficulty that I experienced in finding even one human who had a clue what I was going through and could truly help, created a passionate need in me to create a community for men and women worldwide to receive the solid support and tools they needed in order to completely overcome their own frustrations around food and weight loss and body image.
And so, for the past 20 years that’s what I’ve done. I’ve created a program with simple step-by-step exercises that help my clients very quickly to understand what is behind their stressful relationship with food, their weight issues and their anxiety and insecurities. But most importantly, my program helps people to quickly change their harmful behaviours and find successful resolution to the underlying stressors in their lives.
To make sure that the people who need help can access it no matter where they live, how much time they have or how much money they can spend, I have created a wide range of products and services so there truly is something that will work for everyone to learn these tools and gain a solid sense of confidence in all aspects of their lives.
The CEDRIC Centre, which I founded in 1999, offers individual counseling worldwide, 3 day workshop events and intensive retreats.
I've also created a series of educational cd’s and dvd’s and workbooks and written a book ‘Food is not the Problem, Deal With What Is!’ which has received great reviews and has helped many men and women worldwide. I call it a one-stop-recovery-shop because it’s so full of information and simple tools for every aspect of personal growth and recovery from any harmful pattern of thinking and behaving.
And we also have an incredible web based program that offers daily exercises, weekly lessons, bi-weekly teleclasses and more to give you the support you need 24/7 to create lasting change.
Our web site has hundreds of comments from past clients about how each of these tools and services helped them. I invite you to read them and get a sense for how working with me and my team will help you to create the change you seek in all areas of your life.
For example, in a recent skype session with a 45 year old client who had been struggling with overeating and overweight, chronic dieting and with anxiety and insecurity that impacted her work and home life significantly for decades, and with whom I had been working for 2 months, I received this piece of feedback:
“I just feel so much clearer and have so much more understanding for myself and the people around me. Things with my husband are so much easier. I don’t have to work hard at all to make that happen and he just seems so much warmer and more patient. Overall, I have to say it doesn’t feel like I’ve put a whole lot of effort into this work, it feels quite easy and just seems to be naturally happening. Oh…yeah…and I’m not binging like I used to at all!”
