Dr. Joy Browne is a licensed clinical psychologist and host of her own nationally syndicated radio show. Every day, millions of listeners on more than 300 stations in the United States and Canada hear her give advice on a variety of subjects. Before starting her radio career, she was a teacher, archeologist, and engineer on the space program.
Dr. Browne has won a number of awards for her work, including the American Psychological Association’s President’s Award and the Talker’s Magazine Award for Best Female Talk Show Host—two years in a row. She has also written several books, including the bestseller Dating for Dummies. In it, she shows that dating and relationships do not have to be intimidating.
In addition to her professional career, Dr. Browne is an active volunteer. She has spent many years working with The Herbert G. Birch Summer Project, a summer camp for children and families of children living with HIV and AIDS. She most recently worked with the Salvation Army following the World Trade Center attack in New York City and has started Dr. Joy to the World, her own charitable foundation. She is currently serving on the advisory board of the Mayor’s Commission to combat domestic violence.
The Dr. Joy Browne Show was syndicated on television by CBS Eyemark Entertainment in the 1999-2000 season. Dr. Browne can be seen on television as a guest on shows like The Oprah Winfrey Show and Larry King Live. For more about her radio show, visit www.drjoy.com.
• Adulthood was invented to sort out what we feel was done to us in childhood.
• If we give up the notion that everybody’s life is perfect but ours, we would be a lot happier. Nobody’s life is perfect.
• Charity always feels better to the donor than to the recipient.
• Just doing something—being there, showing up—is how we get braver. Self-esteem is about doing.
• We’ve turned into a nation of mothers to our men. I think it’s a dreadful mistake that doesn’t benefit anybody.

Dr. Browne is an accomplished writer, has been on many talk shows, hosted her own nationally syndicated TV show, and is involved in many charities, yet there is only way to know and understand her. You have to listen to her radio show. A few minutes of listening to Dr. Browne will demonstrate why she has been described as “classy, feisty, and consistently sensible all at the same time.” She is straight forward but not brazen, sensitive but not maudlin.
For those of you who cannot access her radio show live, you can listen to it on the Internet through www.wor710.com. If you are still unable to hear her show, I would suggest starting with one of her books, either The Nine Fantasies That Will Ruin Your Life (and the eight realities that will save you) or Getting Unstuck: 8 Simple Steps to Solving Any Problem.
The following brief excerpt from The Nine Fantasies That Will Ruin Your Life will give you a taste of her attitudes:
I want you to get real! I want you to be willing to look at these nine fantasies that can ruin your life until you are willing to examine, adjust, and discard them. These fantasies are causing you to spend time and energy living in an imaginary world that will not allow you to be effective. These assumptions are pervasive, ubiquitous, and dangerous. The big ugly nine fantasies concern...
• Home: Functional families exist.
• Perfection: Describes everybody...except me.
• Money: Winning the lottery would free me.
• Truth: It will set you free.
• Sex: Men and women are from different planets.
• Innocence: Ignorance is bliss.
• Righteousness: Stick to your guns.
• Fairness: Good always triumphs.
• Love: Somewhere I have a soul mate.
Dr. Browne has developed a reputation for her straight talk and levelheaded advice, and she is definitely worth listening to.
