Expert of Survivorship
Background:
I never would have thought that I would get cancer. I was active, non smoker and cancer didn't run in either side of my family. So when the E.R. Doctor told me that my stupid little cough was cancer, I thought he was crazy. Funny thing how a common cough can quickly be diagnosed as Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. That was my fate back on August 5, 2003. I was only 34 years old for pete sake and my wife Jaylene and I weren't quite married for 3 years yet. It's not fair that I had to come face to face with mortality at the age of 34 or that Jaylene could have very easily been a widow at the age of 29. My cancer journey was long. I was in treatment for 2 years straight which entailed 5 months as an inpatient in the hospital, over 600 chemo treatments, 2 weeks of brain radiation, 1 trip to reverse isolation in I.C.U. and numerous blood and platelet transfusions. This past August 5 Jaylene and I celebrated year 4 post treatment and I'm still showing no evidence of disease. During this time I have compiled 40 stories from other young adults that were diagnosed with cancer between the ages of 15-45 (when diagnosed) and Let's Talk About It: Inspiring Stories From Young Adult Cancer Survivors came to life. The book will be available December 2009.
