If I were to give this a title, it would probably be something like, "You Can If You Have To." I firmly believe that a person can do anything if one has to.
"Right," you say shaking your head. "what qualifies you to say that?"
Simply this: I have been blind since birth. That in itself isn't, in my opinion anyway, so remarkable. I grew up in a family of 7 kids, once I got home from the hospital that is. I was 12 weeks early, and I had pneumonia. the doctors didn't know how much penicillin to give a baby weighing a little over 2.5 pounds, so they figured I had no chance of survival. As luck would have it, I was born in a Catholic hospital. A nun had a different idea. she fed me every two hours with an eye dropper, and, here I am over half a century later.
I graduated from college with a degree in child development in the 1970's, hoping to get a teaching job like a million other young graduates. Teachers were a dime a dozen back then, and school districts certainly weren't hiring teachers who were blind.
So, with a huge sense of embarrassment and self-defeat, I found myself on public assistance. I ended up living in subsidized housing, with a budget of something like $248 per month. I think my rent took about 25% of that. I really don't remember all of the exact numbers. What I do remember is that I never ran out of money. My friends still joke that I can squeeze Lincoln off a penny if I have to.
Over the next 10 years or so I found myself on almost every public program except AFDC, only because I didn't have kids. I got food stamps, I got the free cheese and butter, and I got fuel assistance money. Did I like it? No. Did it do a number on my self-esteem? Yes. did I survive it? Yes, and it helped build my character.
What it taught me was that I could get through anything if I had a goal for which to reach. My goal was to become a hard-working, tax-paying, contributing member of society. And I did it.
Now I have another goal. right now at the beginning of 2008, we are facing a recession. People are feeling the financial pinch like they haven't for some time. If you are one of those people, I know I can help you.
I spent 5 years as a financial representative with a very large financial services company. I left there because I didn't like the way I had to do some things. Now I can do the things I want to help the people who need it.
