Zoloft Lawsuit For Birth Defect And Loss Of Child

Pfizer is facing numerous Zoloft lawsuit related to birth defects. One such case has been filed in Cuyahoga Court of Common Pleas by Susan and James Hodge. They are resident of Ohio and presently residing in Alaska.

Zoloft has caused a lot legal hassle for Pfizer lately. It has been linked to severe birth defects if used during pregnancy by mother. A study by Centers for Disease Control related to National Birth Defects reveals that use of anti depression drugs like Zoloft could cause birth defects in new born if used by mother during pregnancy.
Zoloft is an antidepressant drug. Zoloft is manufactured by the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. It is used for treatment of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD, panic disorder or post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), another stress related disorder, social anxiety and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Doctors prescribe it for other mood related or stress related disorders.

Studies have linked it to severe birth defects. These birth defects may be related to Lung, Heart, Abdomen, Skeletal defects, Neural defects or Skull and face deformation. It could lead to birth defects such as Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in Newborn.

The above said lawsuit alleges that the plaintiffs Susan and James Hodge have lost their child due to Zoloft. The lawsuit claims that Dillion, the couple’s son suffered defect due to use of Zoloft by his mother during pregnancy. Susan was prescribed with Zoloft while being pregnant. Her child was born with birth defects on October 1, 2009 and died on the very same day. The lawsuit alleges that this was due to side effect of Zoloft.

Dillion Hodge, the baby was born with anencephaly, a neural tube defect. Anencephaly refers to absence of a big chunk of brain and skull. Studies link this disease to use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) drugs such as Zoloft by the mother during pregnancy.

The lawsuit blames Pfizer of hiding the facts regarding birth defects caused by it if taken by a pregnant women. It alleges that due to negligence by Pfizer many couples like Hodges have suffered a lot as they have babies born with birth defects and some of them died too. The lawsuit claims that there is no information or warning for would be mothers on the label or information leaflet of the drug regarding birth defects.

As many studies have linked it to severe birth defects, it is going to support their case. Studies link Zoloft to the birth defects such as Lung defects, Heart defects, Abdomen defects, Skeletal defects, Neural defects or Skull and face deformation. Birth defects such as Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in Newborn, Anal atresia (complete or partial closure of the anus), Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), Cleft lip and cleft palate, Spinal bifida, Cardiac (heart) defects, Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), Pulmonary Stenosis, Pulmonary (lung) defects, Club foot, Infant omphalocele and Neural-tube defects could occur in the new born baby if the mother uses Zoloft during pregnancy.
