Who doesn't love the thought of a long, soothing, full body massage? Not only are massages relaxing to the body and mind. In fact, they can be used to correct medical conditions, eliminate chemical dependency, and alleviate many toxic conditions. It's important to realize that massages are used equally as therapy and pampering. There are many conditions that can benefit from massage therapy and no holistic health therapy approach would be complete without massage therapy.

Massage therapy is a comprehensive discipline that is used to assist in spinal re-alignment, muscle and joint therapy, migraines and neck problems. In addition, deep tissue massage has been proven to be beneficial in stimulating the lymphatic system, which is responsible for moving lymph fluid through the body and carrying away toxins, viruses, parasites, and heavy metal pollution. While the following list is by no means exhaustive, here are some conditions that can benefit from different massage therapy techniques:

  • Spinal alignment
  • Stress and tension
  • Migraines
  • Posture issues
  • Hypertension
  • Lymphatic stimulation
  • Flexibility
  • Back pain
  • Circulation
  • Burn recovery
  • PMS

According to the National Center for complementary and Alternative Medicine, those individuals who underwent massage therapy, noted the following results:

  • Preterm infants have improved weight gain.
  • Premenstrual syndrome sufferers have decreased water retention and cramping.
  • High blood pressure patients reported a lower diastolic blood pressure, anxiety, and stress hormones.
  • Burn injury patients reported reduced pain, itching, and anxiety.
  • Asmatic children show better pulmonary function and increased air flow.
  • Arthritis sufferers reported fewer aches and pains, along with less stiffness.

As you can see, massage therapy has the potential to assist in the treatment of many conditions and is not just a relaxation method. I know that many people are apprehensive to make an appointment to get a massage because they feel like it's an imposition. Many people don't like the idea that they are being "waited on" and pampered like a king. But, massage therapy isn't really like that. It is an excellent tool in the combat of many conditions that otherwise would be treated with chemical pills. You wouldn't be ashamed to make an appointment with your family doctor for pain management or other health issues. Likewise, you should not feel uncomfortable to seek alternative healing methods like massage therapy. Your mind and body will thank you for the holistic treatment that a massage therapy appointment will bring you.
