“Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes
How do you measure-measure a year”
–Seasons of Love from Rent

As 2015 comes to a close I am hearing more and more about peoples Resolutions to lose weight, make more money, exercise more, eat healthier, etc. Although goals are very important to our lives and our striving to grow as people… I wonder if we have forgotten to stop and look at what we have NOW. Are we taking the time to celebrate the past year? Our accomplishments? The failures we survived? The Love?

As I ponder my past year I am amazed at everything that has changed in my life. This year has been the most change riddled year of my life. I have had ups and downs and things have at times flipped entirely on their heads…. And I’m sure that I am not alone in my 2015 analysis.

However, the other day I was streaming some music and the song “Seasons of Love” from the Broadway musical Rent began playing. It caused me to stop dead in my tracks! “How do you measure a year? How about love?” The song is all about how we can measure our lives in a million different ways but suggests measuring your life in love.

How are you currently measuring your life? Are you living a life of love for not only others but also for yourself? Do your plans for the New Year include resolutions of weight loss, exercise, and diets? Or are your resolutions about connecting more, loving more, becoming a better human being?

After listening to the song and sheading a few tears, I think back on my year and am amazed at the amount of love I was blessed to have in 2015. I could measure the past year in a million different ways but the truth is that love truly defined my year. Whether that be the love I found for myself, the love I received from friends, the love I was able to provide, or just the love of following a passion. The fact is that love became apparently important to me this past year.

So I challenge you to take time and review your goals for the coming year. If this was your last year on earth would you want to spend more time at work or more time giving and opening yourself up to love? Over the next few days take a moment and CELEBRATE where you have been this past year. It is important that we honor our journeys but also love ourselves through our journeys.
