Working in a Firm of Solicitors in Liverpool City Centre
Written by Tracey Miller
I have a friend who works for a firm of solicitors in Liverpool and has been there for a good few years now. He is one of the hundreds of solicitors in Liverpool city centre and his practice is doing very well. I have know him since school and we lived near each other as children, so our friendship goes back a long way. He was recently telling me about a new trainee which they have just taken on in their office and about how hard the trainee is working but will still have a long time ahead of him before he is fully qualified.
We started to reminisce about our earlier days at university and I reminded him how determined he had been about wanting to practice law. In these days of instant gratification and quick solutions to everything, there are few careers which take years and years of study and training. The fields of medicine and law are two such areas and both have a high degree of stress, hard work and prestige involved.
In order to become a successful solicitor, you will have to train for years and there is a high level of competition to secure the best places with the best firms. There are two types of lawyers in the UK, the solicitors and the barristers (known as advocates in Scotland). A barrister mainly works in the higher courts representing clients which are in more trouble than just simply not paying back a loan, in the county courts. The solicitors are the ones who do the preparation and the research into the cases and deal with the clients in the beginning.
A solicitor is qualified to give legal advice and provide legal services to clients who approach them on a variety of matters. You need to remember that a solicitor will not be an expert at all aspects of the law and will usually specialise in a couple of areas. This is because the law is so vast that to try and deal with all of it is impossible, and so it is better to give good advice on a few subjects than to fumble your way around many. Solicitors are regulated by the Law Society and have to follow certain codes and regulations very strictly.
Going back to this friend of mine, he specialises in commercial law and his firm of solicitors in Liverpool city centre deal with businesses and all the related issues. Things such as leases for shops, boundary disputes, corporate take overs and drawing up contracts are all a part of every day routine for them. The hours are long and in order to be successful, the firm needs to work hard and do the best work that they can. They are lucky in that they have built up a good reputation for themselves and most of their work is generated by word of mouth. This is important because it means that they do not have to go around seeking work.
