I offer and teach distance healing in my Reiki practice. And, I think about this stuff a lot, because students as well as clients ask me how this work is even possible.

See, most of us don’t grow up around people who are familiar with distance healing, and therefore, we’re not taught about it as an option. It’s “magic,” something that we hope is true, but probably isn’t. We’re brought up being told that certain things are real, and others aren’t, by the authority figures in our life. Those authorities might be parents, teachers, religious leaders, or other family members. Whoever they are, we assume that they know more than we do, so we accept what we’re told, assimilate the information into our acceptance of what is real, and move forward with that belief firmly in place.

The other day, one of my students asked how distance healing, set to be received in the future, could even be possible. In Practical Reiki, the method I teach, it is not only possible, it’s a basic tool. The practitioner can set up an energy healing to be received at a future time, simply by designating it so.

Her question was hanging in the air, waiting for my answer. I thought for a moment. Then I came up with this explanation, which I think more people should know.

We need time and space to exist because we have bodies that change and move.
I was once a baby. I am now an adult. I grew. In the future, I will be old. I’m changing all the time. In fact, so are we all. Our cells are regenerating every minute. Our hair grows. We might cut it, color it, or change the style. We change our clothing, we eat and our bodies change the food into fuel, and process the rest as waste. Our hearts are moving in our chests constantly. We are energy in motion.

I can’t be a baby again, or move back to being a child, and shrink. I can’t move forward to being old (and shrink again – haha!). I can only exist and be consciously aware in my current body right now.

I also can’t physically be where I was before, or where I’m going next, at the same time as I can be here where I am now.

Time gives me the chance to have a past, present and future. It also gives me the chance to sync up with others who experience the same. I can make appointments, get to work on time, and pick up my kids from their activities when they are finished. Very convenient.
Our physical reality relies on this experience of linear time, and space, to function.

Our consciousness is not bound by time.
Our thoughts, feelings, and awareness are not physical. These aspects leave the body when we die. They are separate, but integrated with our bodies while we’re alive. They’re a faster, lighter energy than the heavier energy that makes up our physical bodies. (Everything is energy, even hard things like walls and floors. Physical substances are just slower moving than those without physical form.)

Since our thoughts don’t have weight, they vibrate at the speed of non-material things. Without taking up physical space, they are not bound to be stuck where our bodies are, in time and location.

It’s been proven in experiments done by people such as Lynne McTaggart, Dawson Church, and Dr. Valerie Hunt, that thinking of someone causes a change in that person’s brain waves, immediately, and even at a distance. Further, thinking loving thoughts about that person triggers a healing reaction at the cellular level inside that person.

The wonderful thing about energy being untethered by time or space
Because we, as conscious physical beings, have both bodies (bound by space and time) and consciousness that is not, we are able to learn to use both aspects to help us be balanced and healthy in all ways.

We can intentionally (using conscious thought) reach beyond our physical bodies to engage a healing reaction in our bodies now, or in the future. We can activate our creative thoughts to imagine our goals fulfilled, and fuel them with our emotions by expecting the best to happen – and they will become more likely to unfold as imagined.

Distance healing through space and time works because our thoughts, consciousness, emotions, and intentions are not physical substances. They are the same high vibration as the potential energy that exists around, between, and through all life. We only need to think, in a compassionate way, of our intended recipient receiving healing energy, and we are bringing that energy to them as a vibrational frequency.

The time is not important, because it only exists in the weight of our physical form. But, energy is the faster-than-physical part of our existence, and we can engage and direct it by pointing our thoughts, via intention, to activate as we direct them.

Thoughts are not limited by physical reality, therefore, we can intend for a healing to be received at a future time, for anyone alive in the world. This includes animals and plants as well.

Are you open?
Your thoughts are energy, and so are your beliefs. If your beliefs are limited, you simply won’t be able to do the same things that others with more expansive thinking can do. Give yourself a belief check. What do you believe? Where did these beliefs originate? Have you ever tested them by seeing if they hold weight against experience? Have you ever tried something that steps outside of your upbringing?
